Busan is an international city. Every year, hundreds of festivals, concerts, and events draw visitors from around the world to Busan. Even with Covid-19 still controlling the world, Busan has managed to find a way to continue many of its international festivals. Not as many guests are visiting from overseas, but the amount of creativity the organizers have found to allow people from all over the world participate in these events is awe inspiring.
One festival that has been able to continue this year is the Busan International Dance Market. It was held from Friday October 15, 2021, to Monday October 18, 2021, at the Geumjeong Culture Center in Geumjeong-gu. I spoke with Sophie Sohyun Kim, manager of the Busan International Dance Market, and director of SHIN Dance Company, as well as a producer and dancer for the vertical dance group “Project 3n”, to tell us about the festival.

부산은 국제적인 도시다. 매년 수백 여 가지 축제, 콘서트, 행사가 열려 전세계 관광객들이 찾는 곳이다. 여전히 코로나가 전 세계적으로 기승을 부리고 있음에도 불구하고, 부산은 국제적인 축제들을 계속해서 진행할 방법을 찾아냈다. 해외에서 찾는 방문객은 많지 않지만, 주최측은 창의성을 한껏 발휘해 전세계 사람들이 축제를 마음껏 즐길 수 있도록 해주었다.  올해도 이어나갈 수 있었던 축제 중 하나가 부산국제춤마켓이다. 부산국제춤마켓은 2021년 10월 15일 금요일부터 10월 18일 월요일까지 금정문화회관에서 개최되었다. 부산국제춤마켓의 매니저이자 SHIN 댄스 컴퍼니의 이사, 버티컬 댄스그룹 ‘프로젝트 3n’의 프로듀서 겸 댄서인 김소현 씨와 무용제에 대해 이야기를 나누었다.

Q. Please tell us about Busan International Dance Market.
A. This year, we have 9 online and offline programs involving 9 countries and about 200 artists: BIDAM Opening Performance (Friday Oct.15th, 6:30pm), BIDAM Focus (with domestic and international invited performances), Young Dance Challenge (support program for rising Korean choreographers), BIDAM Connection (international co-production program with Israel and the USA), BIDAM Local (booth to introduce dancers from Busan), BIDAM Cinema (showing dance films), BIDAM Concert (lecture-style performance with movie, live music and dance), B-Meeting (for professionals) and Roundtable (a forum on topics of sustainability and Non-Fundable Tokens).
While the domestic performances and activities will be happening live, the international programs will be conducted online via our official website (bidam.kr), and via Zoom (for B-Meeting and for the Roundtable) due to the ongoing Covid situation. 

Q. 부산국제춤마켓에 대해 소개해 주세요.
A. 올해는 9개국 200여명의 아티스트가 참여하는 9개의 온,오프라인 프로그램이 진행됩니다. 비담 개회 공연(10월 15일 금요일 6시 30분), 비담 포커스(국내외 초청공연), 청춘챌린지(떠오르는 한국의 신예 안무가들을 지원하는 프로그램), 비담 커넥션(이스라엘, 미국과 함께 하는 국제 공동 프로덕션 프로그램), 비담 로컬(부산의 댄서들을 소 개하는 부스), 비담 시네마(춤 관련 영화 상영), 비담 콘서트(영화, 라이브 음악, 춤과 함께 하는 강연 형식의 공연), 비 미팅(전문가 대상)과 라운드테이블(지속가능성과 대체 불가능성에 관한 포럼)이 그 프로그램입니다. 국내 공연 및 활동은 생중계로 진행되며, 해외 프로그램은 코로나 상황으로 인해 공식 홈페이지(bidam.kr)와 줌 (비 미팅 및 라운드테이블)을 통해 온라인으로 진행됩니다.

Q. When did BIDAM start, and what is its main activity?

A. BIDAM started in 2010; it is now in its 12th edition. Its main activity is to connect domestic and international dance scenes in Busan.  

Q. 부산국제춤마켓은 언제 시작되었으며, 주요 활동 내용은 무엇입니까?
A. 부산국제춤마켓은 2010년에 시작되어 현재 12회를 맞이 했습니다. 주요 활동은 부산에 있는 국내외 무용, 춤 분야 관계자들을 연결해주는 것입니다.

Q. What style of dance is being performed at BIDAM?
A. The Focus and Connection programs feature mostly contemporary dance companies. However, we do not limit genres for the Young Dance Challenge program, to keep it more open. 

Q. 부산국제춤마켓에서는 어떤 스타일의 춤을 선보이고 있나요?
A. 포커스와 커넥션 프로그램은 대부분 현대 무용 중심입니다. 하지만 청춘챌린지는 장르를 제한하지 않아 보다 개방적입니다.

Q. How are groups selected for the festival?
A. For the Focus program, our artistic director Shin Eun-ju and the program team researched and picked Korean companies that have gained recognition in Seoul, but haven’t yet performed in Busan. For the Young Dance Challenge program, we pre-selected 10 promising teams based on their choreographers’ practice videos or demo reels. 

Q. 무용제 참가 그룹은 어떻게 선정되나요?
A. 포커스 프로그램의 경우, 신은주 예술감독과 프로그램 팀이 서울에서는 인정을 받았으나 한국에서는 아직 공연해 보지 못한 한국 무용단을 조사하여 선정했습니다. 청춘챌린지 프로그램은 소속 안무가의 연습 영상이나 데모 릴을 바탕으로 10개 유망팀을 미리 선정했습니다.

Q. Can international dance groups take part and perform in BIDAM? And how?
A. This year, we didn’t open our call for entries to international submissions; knowing that the Covid situation would prevent us from welcoming overseas companies. But from next year, we hope to be able to accept international submissions again. Our next call for entries will be posted on our website and SNS from March 2022. 

Q. 국제무용팀이 무용제에 참가하여 공연할 수 있나요? 그 과정은 어떠한가요?
A. 올해는 코로나 사태로 해외 무용단 참여가 저조할 것을 우려해 해외 출품 공모를 받지 않았습니다. 내년부터는 다시 해외 출품이 가능해지기를 바랍니다. 다음 출품 공고는 2022 년 3월부터 웹사이트와 SNS에 게시될 예정입니다.

Q. Are you performing yourself at the festival? Or one of your groups?  What will you be performing?
A. SHIN Dance Company will be performing for the BIDAM opening program. As for myself, I will be performing from the ticket booth, a piece titled ‘the art of managing a dance event and delivering tickets to our enthusiastic audience’.

Q. 김소현 씨 본인께서도 무용제에서 공연하시나요? 아니면 무용 단으로 참가하시나요?  어떤 공연을 하시나요?
A. 신 댄스 컴퍼니는 무용제 개회식 프로그램에 참여합니다. 저는 매표소에서 ‘무용제를 관리하며 열정적인 관객들에게 티켓을 전달하는 예술’이라는 제목으로 공연할 예정입니다.

Q. How can people enjoy the performances? Where can people buy tickets?
A. Tickets can be bought on the website Interpark Ticket (search for: BIDAM), or directly at the Geumjeong Culture Center.
Some people tend to consider contemporary dance as ‘difficult to understand’, or ‘hard to interpret’. My advice is: try to just watch and feel these performances. They are meant for the hearts, not for the minds. 

Q. 관객들이 어떻게 공연을 즐길 수 있나요? 티켓 구입은 어디서 할 수 있나요?
A. 티켓은 인터파크 티켓 홈페이지(BIDAM으로 검색)에서 구매하거나 금정문화회관에서 직접 구매할 수 있습니다.
현대무용을 ‘이해하기 어렵다’거나 ‘해석하기 어렵다’고 여기는 경향이 있습니다. 저는 이렇게 말씀 드리고 싶어요. 공연을 보고 느끼세요. 현대무용은 생각이 아니라 마음을 위한 것입니다.

Q. Are there any restrictions for the Audience because of Covid-19?
A. We will conduct simple temperature checks at the entrance, and we must keep the theater’s seats at half capacity. Eating and drinking within the theater will be forbidden. 

Q. 코로나로 인한 관객 제한이 있나요?
A. 입구에서 간단히 체온 체크를 해야 하고, 좌석 수 절반을 비워야 합니다. 공연장 내에서 음식물 섭취도 금지됩니다.

Q. Is there any other dance festival happening in Busan?

A. There are two others focusing on dance: Busan International Dance Festival (in June), and Busan International Improvisation Dance Festival (in April). 

Q. 부산에서 열리는 다른 무용제도 있나요?

A. 부산국제무용제(6월)와 부산국제즉흥춤축제(4월)가 있습 니다.

Q. What do you hope people take away from the festival?
A. I want to present the audience with the opportunity to experience different styles of dances and performances, including and especially those that they haven’t seen before. It is my hope for them to be touched by novelty, to be surprised, and to expand their imagination. 

Q. 관객들이 무용제에서 어떤 것을 얻어가기를 바라시나요?
A. 관객들이 다양한 스타일의 춤과 공연을 경험할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 이전에는 본 적도 없는 특별한 공연들 말이죠. 새로운 것에 감동하고, 놀라고, 상상력의 지평을 넓히는 기회가 되기를 바랍니다.
