Project 3N (Third Nature) released a dance video of its latest project on Youtube for just 24 hours. Titled <숨 SUM:breath> the piece combined two dance performances with the motif of, breath, pure energy and human life. Created by the artistic director and choreographyer Donghee Kim, performers were elevated, and suspended for shots on the side of a 100-meter high-rise building overlooking Yeongdo and Nampodong. Project 3N, an art group based in South Korea and Michigan, with the aim of fusing traditional and contemporary dance, is a group that specializes in aerial dance.

프로젝트 써드네이처가 단 24시간 동안 유튜브에 최신 댄스 프로젝트를 공개했다. <숨 SUM:breath>이라는 제목의 이 작품은 숨, 순수한 에너지, 인간의 생명력을 모티프로 하는 두 가지 댄스 퍼포먼스로 구성되었다. 예술 감독 겸 안무가 김동희가 창작한 이 프로젝트에서 공연자들은 영도와 남포동이 보이는 100미터 높이 고층 빌딩에 매달렸다. 프로젝트 써드네이처는 한국과 미시간을 기반으로 활동하며 전통춤과 현대적댄스를 아우르는 데 초점을 맞춘 예술 그룹으로, 특히 공중무용을 전문으로 한다.

Aerial dance dates back to the 1970 in the United States. It is typically divided into two subtypes, vertical: where the dancers are suspended in a fixed harness to give the appearance of weightlessness, and aerial: where the dancer intertwines herself using rope or silk to gain and lose height. The type of performance used by Project 3N is vertical dance.

공중 무용의 시작은 1970년 미국으로 거슬러 올라간다. 공중 무용은 크게 두 가지로 나뉘는데, 댄서들이 무중력을 표현하기 위해 고정장치에 매달려 춤추는 버티컬 댄스와 줄이나 실크를 이용해 무게를 조절하며 춤추는 아파라투스다. 써드네이처는 버티컬 댄스를 선보였다.

What is vertical dance?

버티컬 댄스란 무엇인가요?

Vertical dance is where you don’t use the floor or the typical performance space but you use a wall or the outside of a building, or nature, as the theater and use gravity to move your body 360 degrees. You use the wall as the ground and while hanging on the rope.

버티컬 댄스는 바닥이나 일반적인 공연장 대신 벽 또는 빌딩이나 자연의 외부를 공연장 삼아 중력을 이용해 360도 범위로 움직이는 예술장르입니다. 벽을 바닥 삼아 줄에 매달려 공연하는 것이죠.

What is your background in dance?

경력을 소개해 주세요.

I have been working at the Shin dance company for seven years. I do pole dancing and aerial hoop dancing as a hobby, so I was into more extreme styles of movements. I always like to discover my limits and try new things. One day I saw a movie with vertical dancing in it and then I looked it up. And then somehow, magically, I saw an Instagram post about this vertical dance workshop organized by Project 3N. At the time, they were trying to recruit dancers because they needed dancers to join in. And at the time, anyone could join, so I applied and I got selected. Since then, I’ve done some training workshops on weekends. Our first performance, Intolerance Beauty, was in 2019. That was the beginning. I really loved it. I love the feeling of being free in the sky.

7년 간 신 댄스 컴퍼니에서 일했습니다. 취미로 폴댄스와 에어리얼 후프를 접하며 익스트림한 움직임에 흥미를 가지게 되었습니다. 제 한계를 시험하고 새로운 시도를 하길 좋아했습니다. 어느 날 버티컬 댄스에 관한 영화를 보고 검색을 해 보았어요. 그리고 마치 마법처럼, 써드네이처의 버티컬 댄스 워크숍에 관한 인스타그램 글을 봤죠. 당시 써드네이처는 댄서들을 모집 중이었어요. 누구든 신청할 수 있었기 때문에 저도 신청서를 낸 뒤 선발되었습니다. 그 이후 매주 주말 트레이닝 워크숍을 진행했습니다. 2019년 첫 공연이었던 ‘견딜 수 없는 아름다움’을 선보였습니다. 그게 시작이었어요. 너무 즐거웠습니다. 하늘에 있는 기분이 정말 좋았어요.

In 2020 Project 3N got another project supported by the Busan Cultural Foundation but, because of Corona, we couldn’t do it like the previous performance where people could come and watch. So we decided to make it a dance video.

그리고 2020년 부산문화재단이 후원하는 새로운 프로젝트에 참여하게 됐어요. 하지만 코로나로 인해 예전처럼 관
객들이 와서 볼 수 있는 형식으로는 진행할 수 없었습니다. 그래서 이번에는 한정적으로 볼 수 있는 댄스 영상을 만들어보기로 했어요.

 Are you planning to upload the video again or show it somewhere else?

다시 영상을 공개하거나 다른 곳에서 선보일 계획은 없나요?

The new video filmed in 2020 was screened on Youtube for 24hours on February 20th, 2021. We plan to submit it to various dance film festivals this year, and then release the entire video for the public after that.

2020년 촬영한 신작의 영상을 2021년 2월 20일 하루동안만 상영하였고, 올 한 해 동안 다양한 무용영화제 등에 출품을 시도해 보고 그 이후 다시 전체 영상을 다시 공개할 계획이 있습니다.

If people want to learn vertical dance, where can people take classes?

버티컬 댄스를 배우고 싶다면 어디로 가야 할까요?

Currently, Project 3N is the only team in Busan that specializes in vertical dance. However, we also mainly work together when there is a project, and we need our own venue for regular activities in the future. If this is solved, regular exercises and workshops will be possible.

현재 부산에서 버티컬 댄스를 전문적으로 하는 팀은 써드네이처 뿐입니다. 하지만 저희도 주로 프로젝트가 있을 때 함께 모여서 작업하며 향후 상시적인 활동을 위해서는 자유롭게 사용가능한 장소가 필요한 상황입니다. 이 부분이 해결된다면 정기적 연습과 워크숍을 진행할 수 있을 것입니다.

What are your future performances?

앞으로 어떤 퍼포먼스를 선보일 계획인가요?

Project 3N, is preparing a convergence project of technology and art, and an international collaboration project in between Europe and Busan. Also, the BIDAM (Busan International Dance Market) will be held at the Geumjeong Cultural Center from October 14th to 18th in this year.
