Buddha’s Birthday Party at Samgwangsa

Despite being founded as recently as 1986, Samgwangsa represents a blend of the traditional and contemporary facets of Buddhism in Korea. It is tucked into the hillside of Baegyang Mountain near Seomyeon, and the views of Busan city highlight the city’s modernity. Despite being huge, 120,000 square meters, Samgwangsa is a haven of peace and calm, and because it is located so close to the heart of Busan, it offers a great opportunity to change down a gear from the bustle of Seomyeon. You can unwind amidst the traditional Buddhist temple scenery, just a short bus ride from the heart of Busan.

삼광사는 비교적 최근인 1986년에 지어졌으나 한국 불교의 전통과 현대적 측면이 어우러져 있는 곳이다. 서면 근처 백양산 언덕에 위치해 있어 현대적인 부산의 경치를 만끽할 수 있다. 120,000제곱미터에 달하는 거대한 면적이지만 평화와 고요를 느낄 수 있고, 부산 중심부와 매우 가까운 이곳은 북적이는 서면과는 정반대의 분위기를 갖고 있다. 부산 도심에서 버스를 타고 잠깐 움직이는 것만으로도 전통적인 절에서 여유를 즐길 수 있다.

Since the Goryeo Dynasty, the tradition of Cheontaejong has been kept intact. Cheontaejong means Cheontae sect; that is, the Korean Order of Buddhism. As a part of Cheontaejong, Samgwangsa represents a Korean attitude toward the ancient beliefs of Buddhism. In addition to these traditional connections, Samgwangsa has also been hailed for bringing an element of modernism to Buddhism, in particular, to Buddhism in Busan.

고려 시대 이래로 천태종의 전통은 그대로 이어져 내려왔다. 천태종이란 한국 불교 교단을 의미한다. 천태종에 속한 삼광사는 고대 한반도가 불교를 어떻게 여겼는지를 보여준다. 전통과의 접점 뿐 아니라, 삼광사는 현대적인 불교 요소, 그 중에서도 특히 부산의 불교를 잘 보여주는 것으로 일컬어진다.

The name, Samgwangsa, literally means Three Light Temple. However, it refers to the three lights of mercy, wisdom, and a white tiger, shining down on sentient beings. The white tiger incorporates a wish that the light of the Buddha, whose misgivings and hatred have disappeared, will illuminate the world, so that all beings are comfortable. As you meander around the temple during the Buddha’s Birthday celebrations, or any time during the year, let the calm of the temple wash over you and think about those three lights shining upon you.

삼광사라는 명칭은 말 그대로 세 개의 빛이라는 의미다. 그와 동시에 자비, 지혜, 백호의 세 가지 빛이 중생들을 비춘다는 뜻으로도 풀이된다. 백호는 모든 불안과 혐오를 버린 부처님의 빛이 세상을 비추고 이 땅의 모든 생명의 평안을 염원하는 마음을 품고 있다. 부처님오신 날이든 어느 때든 삼광사를 거닐 때면 고요함으로 마음을 씻어내고 자신을 밝히는 세 개의 빛을 생각해 보자.

Samgwangsa holds various cultural events, festivals, activities and performances throughout the year. That said, the Buddha’s Birthday celebrations in May, are second to none. The festival ran from Children’s Day, on May fifth to Buddha’s Birthday, on May 19th (05/05 – 05/19), and featured over 50,000 lanterns in a variety of colors and formations, that are bound to dazzle any visitor. Along with the visual spectacle, there are opportunities for guests to learn about the cultural history and relevance of the temple, and of Buddhism in Korea.

The Buddha’s Birthday holiday is celebrated in countries across Asia, and while in Korea it is not as big a holiday as Lunar New Year and Chuseok, it is definitely a day that is eagerly anticipated. The larger Korean holidays are loaded with some obligation to travel long distances and spend time with families, whereas Buddha’s Birthday is a one day holiday that can be spent however we please. Many people in Korea, including those who aren’t Buddhist, enjoy a trip to a temple during Buddha’s Birthday to enjoy the lights, take pictures, and to simply relax with friends and loved ones.

삼광사는 일년 내내 다양한 문화 행사, 축제, 액티비티, 공연을 개최한다. 다시 말해 5월에 있는 부처님 오신 날 행사는 다른 어떤 곳보다 훌륭하다. 행사는 5월 5일 어린이날부터 5월 19일 부처님 오신 날까지 진행되며, 5만 개가 넘는 색색깔 여러 가지 모양의 연등빛으로 방문객을 맞이한다. 볼거리뿐만 아니라 삼광사와 한국의 불교와 관련한 문화사를 배울 기회이기도 하다.

부처님 오신 날은 아시아 전역의 기념일이다. 한국에서는 추석만큼 큰 연휴는 아니지만 많은 사람들이 간절히 기다리는 날임에는 분명하다. 대목인 연휴에는 장거리 여행을 하거나 가족과 시간을 보내야 한다는 의무감이 있지만, 부처님 오신 날은 원하는 대로 보낼 수 있는 하루짜리 휴일이다. 한국에 있는 많은 사람들은 불교 신자가 아니라 하더라도 절에 가서 연등을 구경하고, 사진을 찍고, 친구와 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 편안한 하루를 보낸다.

The temple is accessible year round from early morning into the evening. It is located in Busanjingu, between Citizen’s Park and Children’s Park. Various buses pass the temple and there is also an evening shuttle that runs from Samgwangsa via LG Science Hall stop (near Citizen’s Park), to Seomyeon.
