  Say, what’s that song again? Somedays, it’s as automatic as breathing as you catch yourself humming it unaware. It’s catchy for sure. Relief writhes when you hear it. In German, ohrwurm, or earworm, refers to this sticky phenomenon - music burrowing into your brain. Everyone’s experienced it. Busan musician Gino Brann explores the creative process that gives rise to it. In his podcast Liquid Sound, Bravo features a musician/band connected to the rich Busan music scene, from pop to punk, ambient to acoustic, rap to rhapsodies. Punctuated by musical interludes, each episode is structured as a series of conversations, exploring the process behind the madness. It’s mad, but in a good way. A fun way. Plus, each episode features a live in-studio performance. It’s nice to hear live music again.

  아까 그 노래 제목이 뭐라고 했더라? 언젠가 숨쉬듯 자연스럽게 그 노래를 흥얼거리는 자신을 발견하게 된다. 확실히 중독적인 노래다. 노래를 듣자 안도감이 몰려온다. 독일어로 는 ohrwurm, 영어로는 earworm이라고 불리는 이 현상은 노래가 귓가에 계속해서 맴도는 것을 의미한다. 다들 경험해 봤을 것이다. 부산의 뮤지션 지노 브란(Gino Brann)이 이 현상이 생기는 과정을 탐구해보았다. 그의 팟캐스트 리퀴드 사운드(Liquid Sound) Bravo에서는 팝에서 펑크, 잔잔한 환경음악에서 어쿠스틱, 랩과 랩소디에 이르기까지 부산의 다양한 음악을 아우르는 뮤지션과 밴드들을 조망한다. 간주곡을 곁들인 각 에피소드는 광기의 뒷면을 탐험하는 대화로 이루어져 있다. 좋은 의미에서의 광기다. 재미있는 방식으로 말이다. 각 에피소드에서는 스튜디오 내 라이브 공연을 담고 있기도 하다. 라이브 뮤직을 다시 들을 수 있어 참 좋다.

What is Liquid Sound? Why “Liquid Sound”?

  Liquid Sound is a podcast dedicated to music, songwriting, and the creative process. Each episode features a guest musician/band. We listen to their music and chat about writing, recording, and performing music. As for the name, I was quite inspired by “Ocean of Sound” by David Toop. It’s a book about ambient music. One of the main takeaways I had was that music is all around us, all the time. As long as we’re willing to keep our minds and ears open, we can find ourselves drifting in an ocean of sound anytime. When I decided to team up with the Liquid Arts Network for this project, the name Liquid Sound just seemed to fit well!

리퀴드 사운드란 무엇인가요? 왜 “리퀴드 사운드”인가요?

  리퀴드 사운드는 음악, 작곡, 창작 활동에 관한 팟캐스트입니다. 매 애피소드마다 게스트 뮤지션과 밴드를 모십니다. 게스트의 음악을 감상하고, 작곡, 녹음, 공연에 관한 이야기를 나눕니다. 리퀴드 사운드라는 데이비드 툽(David Toop)의 “오션 오브 사운드(Ocean of Sound)”에서 영감을 받았어요. 잔잔한 환경음악에 관한 책이에요. 인상적인 요소 중 하나는 음악은 우리 주변 어디에나 있다는 것이었습니다. 마음과 귀를 활짝 열어두고자 하는 한 언제나 소리의 바다 속에서 떠다닐 수 있다는 거예요. 리퀴드 아츠 네트워크 팀과 이 프로젝트를 하기로 마음 먹었을 때 우리에게 딱 맞는 이름이라고 생각했어요!

What drew you to focus on the behind-the-scenes aspect of musicianship?

  A lot of my friends are musicians and songwriters. I’ve found our conversations often returning to these kinds of topics. What were you going through when you wrote that song? What made you want to use that chord there? How did you come up with that lyric? Those conversations were always unique and often quite enlightening in unexpected ways. As the pandemic rolled on, those friends and I found ourselves without gigs, rehearsals, or even just opportunities to get together and jam. Liquid Sound has given them a way to continue to share their music, as well as shed some light onto the origins of their songs.

뮤지션들이 가진 음악성의 이면에 집중하게 된 계기는 무엇인가요?

  뮤지션 및 작곡가 친구들을 많이 알고 있어요. 그 친구들과 이야기할 때 자주 이런 화제로 돌아온다는 걸 깨달았습니다. 이 곡을 쓸 때 어떤 경험을 했어? 왜 여기에 이 코드를 썼어? 이 가사는 어떻게 떠올리게 되었어? 이런 대화들은 항상 특별했고 예상치 못한 부분에서 배울 점이 많았어요. 판데믹이 계속되며 출연이나 리허설이 줄고, 아예 함께 모일 기회조차 잃어버리게 되었습니다. 리퀴드 사운드는 이들이 계속해서 자신의 음악을 공유하고 그 곡의 시작점에 대해 이야기할 수 있는 장이 되어줍니다.

Have you heard of the expression “earworm”?  How do you feel about the construction of songs that wiggles its way into your brain and doesn’t let go?

  It's something of a holy grail, isn’t it? To create something that is so sticky it gets lodged into someone gray matter. I don’t know if there is a formula to it, but I think in order for a melody to become an earworm, it needs to offer to the listener something both familiar and fresh. In the end, I don’t think we consciously choose earworms, it’s more like they choose us.

“이어웜(earwom)”이라는 표현을 들어본 적 있으신가요?

머릿속을 자꾸만 맴돌며 잊혀지지 않는 노래의 구조에 대해 어떻게 생각하시나요?

  성배 같은 거죠. 그렇지 않나요? 누군가의 머릿속에 쏙 들어가 잊혀지지 않는 무언가를 만드는 것 말이에요. 그런 곡을 만드는 데 특별한 공식이 있는지는 모르겠지만, 귓가에 맴도는 멜로디를 쓰려면 익숙하면서도 신선한 느낌을 주어야 해요. 결국 이렇게 중독성 있는 곡은 우리가 의식적으로 만드는 게 아니라, 그 곡이 우리를 선택하는 쪽에 가깝습니다.

What do you feel your podcast offers the casual listener?

  With the craft of songwriting (and really any creative pursuit), everyone has their own personal method and style. Comparing how different artists approach something so esoteric often makes for some interesting stories and conversations, even for someone who aren't necessarily fluent in music. What inspires people? What do people do when they feel creatively blocked? These are topics that anyone can relate to.

Pretty much everyone likes music and has a very personal relationship with it, but most people feel like they can’t write a song. I’m here to tell you- Yes, you can! You don’t need any fancy degree or special knowledge. Just try it without expectations. Even if it’s terrible, it doesn’t matter because you can always write another song. Sooner or later, you’ll write something you like. Then you’ve created something out of nothing and that is truly a gift that only you can give, because it comes from deep within you.

일반 청취자분들은 이 팟캐스트에서 무엇을 얻어갈 수 있을까요?

  작곡(그 외 모든 창의적 활동)을 할 때는 저마다 자기만의 방법과 스타일이 있습니다. 심오한 것들을 다루는 여러 아티스트들의 방식을 비교하는 건 아주 흥미로운 이야기가 됩니다. 음악에 대해 잘 알지 못하는 사람에게도 그렇지요. 사람들은 무엇에서 영감을 얻는 가? 창의력이 막혀버렸다고 느낄 땐 무엇을 할까? 이런 화제는 누구나 공감할 만한 것입니다.

거의 모든 사람들이 음악을 좋아하고 다양한 방식으로 음악과 엮이지만, 대부분은 스스로 곡을 쓸 수는 없다고 생각합니다. 제가 말씀 드리죠. 쓸 수 있습니다! 대단한 학위나 특별한 지식은 필요치 않습니다. 기대 없이 일단 시작해보세요. 결과가 엉망이더라도 문제 없습니다. 언제든 다음 곡을 쓸 수 있으니까요. 머지 않아 마음에 드는 곡을 쓰게 될 거예요. 무에서 유를 창조해낸 셈이죠. 이 창조물은 당신의 내면 깊은 곳에서 왔으니, 오직 당신만이 가질 수 있는 능력입니다.

I particularly enjoyed those moments when it goes off the rails from technical matters into those intimate moments that inform the soul behind the music. E.g. When The Bathing Belles riffs on “I love you,” or when Mike Ventola tangents to the Lotus Eaters from myth to poem to Buddhist symbolism. The interview with Busan Indie legend KIM IL DU seemed especially candid as he intimated about his life after high school. 

What moments have you found surprising?

  Definitely those moments you’ve described have been highlights. Despite there being overarching “themes,” it’s really just people having a casual conversation and, like any good jam session, we let things go wherever they want to go. Some topics require a deeper dive and some pass by like signposts to another destination. But every episode has had at least a few moments where I found myself surprised and delighted.

개인적으로는 음악적 기교를 떠나 음악 뒤의 실제 사람들과 친밀한 이야기를 나누게 되는 순간들을 특히 좋아해요. 베이딩 벨즈(Bathing Belles)의 “I love you” 리프나 마이크 벤톨라(Mike Ventola)가 신화 속 로터스이터나 불교적 상징을 사용할 때처럼요. 부산 인디의 전설인 김일두 씨와 고등학교 이후의 삶에 대해 이야기했던 인터뷰도 무척 진솔해 보였어요. 놀라웠던 경험에 대해 이야기해 주세요.

  말씀하신 순간들은 분명 인상적이었어요. 아주 중요한 “주제”가 있다고는 하지만, 사실 제 팟캐스트는 사람들과 평범한 대화를 나누는 거예요. 좋았던 잼 공연에 대해 이야기하는 식으로요. 게스트들이 원하는 얘기를 하도록 해요. 어떤 주제는 조금 더 깊이 다뤄야 하고 또 어떤 주제는 목적지를 향한 길 위의 표지판처럼 스쳐 지나가기도 하죠. 하지만 모든 에피소드에서 놀라움과 기쁨을 경험하는 순간이 적어도 몇 번은 있어요.

How do you currently manage interviews? How do you feel that COVID has affected your process?

  We try to maintain best practices, and keep things small but intimate, often opting to do remote interviews or even delaying interviews altogether as the daily case numbers rise and fall. It’s not ideal! But musicians are generally pretty eager to get their music out into the world so fortunately we can offer a safe way to do that. 

  요즈음은 어떻게 인터뷰를 진행하나요? 코로나 때문에 생긴 변화가 있나요?

최대한 평소대로 유지하며 소규모로 진행하려고 노력 중이에요. 원격 인터뷰를 하거나 확진자 수 변화에 따라 인터뷰 전체를 연기하기도 합니다. 이상적이지는 않지요! 하지만 뮤지션들은 자신의 음악을 세상에 내놓고 싶어하는 열망이 대체로 강한 편이고, 그것을 안전한 방법으로 진행할 수 있어 다행이에요.

I've noticed a running theme- you tend to ask your guests about their firsts, like when you ask about first songs. What is it about firsts that fascinate you? What was your first song?

I like to ask guests about their early songwriting memories, or what first got them interested in music because I feel like everyone has a unique answer and those memories are often quite vivid. I also like to follow that up by asking how their approach to songcraft has changed or shifted over the years. There’s often some interesting revelations that occur just by connecting that thread from past to present. Music is an ongoing conversation. The music you gravitate towards was probably something that a friend or a family member introduced you to, and they in turn were introduced by someone else, and on and on. There is no start or endpoint. But digging into those memories can help illuminate our understanding of music. As for my first song, I remember being in the 5th or 6th grade and a couple of friends were over at my house. I had recently had my first guitar lesson and I showed them the two chords I knew: G and C. I kept playing them over and over and despite none of us knowing how to play any instruments or having any experience with love, we started a band that day and wrote a love song called “Why?”

연속적으로 같은 주제가 반복된다는 걸 느꼈어요. 게스트들의 첫 순간에 대해 질문을 하시는 것 같아요. 첫 번째 노래에 관한 질문처럼요. 처음에 매료되는 이유는 무엇인가요? 브란 씨의 첫 번째 노래는 무엇인가요?

  뮤지션들에게 처음 곡을 쓸 때의 경험이나 음악에 관심을 갖게 된 순간에 대해 질문하는 걸 좋아해요. 저마다 독특한 대답을 들려주고, 꽤 생생하게 첫 순간을 기억하고 있거든요. 작곡 기술이 시간에 따라 어떻게 변했는지 물어보는 것도 좋아합니다. 과거와 현재를 잇는 실을 연결하면 재미있는 일이 일어나곤 해요. 음악은 계속되는 대화입니다. 끌리는 음악은 친구나 가족이 소개해준 노래인 경우가 많고, 또 그들은 다른 사람에게 소개를 받았을 것이고, 계속 이어지는 거예요. 시작도 끝도 없습니다. 하지만 이렇게 추억을 꺼내다보면 음악을 더욱 깊게 이해할 수 있게 됩니다. 

제 첫 번째 노래에 대해 이야기해보자면, 초등학교 5, 6학년쯤 친구들과 저희 집에서 놀던 때로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 막 첫 번째 기타 레슨을 받은 뒤여서 친구들에게 제가 아는 두 개의 코드 G와 C를 보여주고 있었어요. 우리 중 누구도 악기를 연주하거나 사랑을 해본 적이 없었는데도 계속해서 두 코드를 반복해 연주하다 그 날 바로 밴드를 만들고 “왜(Why)?”라는 사랑 노래를 썼지요.

As a musician, do you feel that delving into other musicians’ processes has enriched your own?

  Absolutely! The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that everyone has a story, everyone has a song. We’re constantly writing and rewriting it, singing and reharmonizing it, but as long as you listen with an open mind and put in the time necessary to hone your craft, you can make something honest, true, meaningful, and beautiful. Music has the power to heal, inspire, bring people together, and set free our souls. There can never be enough of it.

뮤지션으로서 다른 뮤지션들의 작업 방식을 알아보는 게 스스로의 작업의 질을 높인다고 생각하시나요?

  물론입니다! 제가 배운 가장 큰 한 가지는 모든 사람이 사연이 있고 노래가 있다는 거예요. 우리는 끊임없이 그것을 쓰고 또 쓰고, 노래를 하고 화음을 더하고 있어요. 마음을 열고 기교를 연마할 충분한 시간을 들이면 솔직하고, 진실하고, 의미 있고, 아름다운 무언가를 만들 수 있게 됩니다. 음악은 사람들을 치유하고, 영감을주고, 화합시키고, 우리의 영혼을 자유롭게 합니다. 음악엔 결코 물리는 법이 없어요.
