온정성 치과

Finding quality dental care in Busan can often mean a trip to a large dental clinic in one of the more crowded areas of Busan. Often, smaller clinics can be just as good and offer more personalized service. It can often be a personal touch that sets them apart. It can also be a breath of fresh air when that clinic is woman owned and operated. Onjeongsu Dental Clinic opened in April 2020. Located at the Suyeong rotary, it is owned and operated by Dr. Hye-yeon Lim who is the single doctor on staff. Although small, the services the hospital is able to provide are equal to larger clinics around Busan with the added benefit of location for those located in the Suyeong area. I spoke with Sujin Gu, a dental hygienist at the clinic, to talk about the clinic and medical tourism in Busan.

부산에서 양질의 치과 진료를 받으려면 대개 가장 번화가에 있는 대형 치과에 가야 한다. 하지만 때로는 소규모 치과에서 더 나은 맞춤형 서비스를 받을 수도 있다. 정성스러운 손길이 둘 사이의 차이를 만들 수 있다. 여성 원장이 운영하는 치과가 주는 신선한 공기가 차이를 만 들기도 한다. 2020년 4월 개원한 온정성 치과의 이야기다. 수영로터리에 위치한 온정성 치과는 임혜연 원장이 단독 운영하는 1인 치과다. 소규모 의원이지만 제공하는 서비스는 부산 내 대형 병원에 버금갈만해서, 수영 주변에 사는 사람들에게는 큰 이점이 된다. 온정성 치과 치위 생사 구수진 씨와 함께 부산 내 의원과 의료관광에 대해 이야기를 나누었다.

Q. Thank you for your time. I’d like to start by asking you to tell us about the clinic.
A. Dr. Lim started this clinic in April 2020. We do many treatments, including preventative care, conservative, and periodontal care. We offer prosthetics, temporomandibular joint treatment, minor surgery, and implants. I guess the only thing we don’t offer is orthodontic treatment.

Q. 시간을 내주셔서 감사합니다. 먼저 치과 소개를 부탁 드리고 싶습니다.
A. 2020년 4월 임혜연 원장님이 개원하셨습니다. 예방치료, 보존치료, 치주과 치료를 포함한 다양한 치료가 가능합니다. 보철, 악관절 치료, 소규모 수술과 임플란트 치료도 합니다. 저희 치과에서 하지 않는 것은 교정 치료가 유일한 것 같습니다.

Q. How large is the hospital?
A. We are currently operating our clinic on one floor. We have four certified dental hygienists who work in our 3 treatment rooms. We also have an operating room and a space for temporomandibular joint physical therapy.

Q. 치과 규모는 어느 정도인가요?
A. 현재는 한 층으로 운영하고 있습니다. 3개 치료실에 서 총 네 명의 치위생사가 일하고 있습니다. 수술실과 악관절 물리치료를 위한 공간도 갖추고 있습니다.

Q. Does your hospital have any specialization?
A. Dr. Lim specializes in oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as integrated dentistry. Although the clinic is not a large-scale clinic, we provide treatment though the latest equipment. One of the main things that sets us apart is that our clinic has individual treatment rooms, so patients can have more privacy and the potential from cross-infection is reduced, which is important in the era of Covid. We value our relationship with our patients and strive to understand the entire person, from head to heart, and do our best to provide comfortable treatment.

Q. 전문분야가 따로 있나요?
A. 임 원장님은 구강안면수술을 비롯한 통합 치과의학 전문의입니다. 소규모 치과지만 최신 장비를 이용해 치료합니다. 다른 치과와 차별화되는 점은 1인 치료실이 있어, 사생활을 보호하고 교차감염 위험을 낮출 수 있습니다. 코로나 시대에 무척 중요한 부분이죠. 환자들과의 관계를 중요시하여 그들을 진심으로 이해하고 편안한 서비스를 제공하기 위해 최선을 다하고 있습니다.

Q. What type of patient comes here?
A. Mostly local residents. We see people from all age groups who want to get basic preventative services like scaling or small cavities filled. Since we’re able to provide a personal service our patients come back to us again and again.

Q. 어떤 환자들이 방문하나요?
A. 대부분 동네 주민들이에요. 스케일링이나 작은 충치 치료처럼 기본적인 예방 치료를 원하는 다양한 연령 대의 환자가 있습니다. 맞춤형 서비스를 제공해 드리기 때문에 지속적으로 저희 치과를 방문해 주십니다.

Q. How many patients do you see in a year?
A. Despite being a new clinic, in 2020 we saw around 2,000 patients and the number is gradually increasing.

Q. 연간 환자수가 어느 정도인가요?
A. 개원한지 얼마 안 된 치과인데도 불구하고 2020년에 는 약 2천여 명의 환자들이 방문해주셨고, 그 숫자도 계속해서 증가하고 있습니다.

Q. Do any foreign patients visit?
A. Because we are new, we aren’t really known in the wider foreign community. We have seen foreign patients for emergency services and general care, but not that many.

Q. 외국인 환자도 있나요?
A. 신규 병원이다보니 아직 외국인 커뮤니티에 널리 알려지지는 않았어요. 응급 상황 및 일반 진료를 보러 오신 외국인 환자들은 있습니다만, 수가 많지는 않습니다.

Q. Do you prove translation services for foreigners?
A. Currently we don’t have an official translator on staff but several members of our staff speak English, including the doctor. We also have documents about the procedure and precautions after treatment in English.

Q. 외국인을 위한 통역 서비스도 있나요?
A. 현재는 공식적인 통역 직원은 없습니다. 하지만 원장님을 포함한 직원들 몇몇이 영어를 할 수 있습니다. 시술이나 치료 후 주의사항과 같은 서류도 영문으로 마련되어 있습니다.

Q. Why do you think foreigners should travel to Busan for medical treatment?
A. Busan is the second largest city in Korea and has excellent medical services. At the same time, you can enjoy traveling because of the sea and nearby mountains. There are many well-known tourist destinations and many places to see, eat, and play. So not only can a patient get the medical service they need they can enjoy the city and that can speed up the recovery of some patients.

Q. 의료 서비스를 받기 위해 외국인들이 부산에 와야 하는 이유가 있을까요?
A. 부산은 한국 제 2의 도시로 훌륭한 의료 서비스를 갖추고 있습니다. 그와 동시에 바다와 산으로 여행을 하기도 좋은 곳이에요. 유명 관광지도 많고 볼거리, 먹을 거리, 놀 거리가 가득합니다. 원하는 의료 서비스를 받으면서 도시를 즐기기에 좋은 곳이죠. 이는 어떤 환자들에겐 빠른 회복에도 도움이 됩니다.

Q. How has medical tourism changed in Busan and Korea since you started working?
A. The clinic started right after Covid-19 hit in Korea. This really reduced the number of foreign patents. However, I think that medical tourism related to dental treatment will increase because the value of our teeth increases as our society ages.

Q. 일을 시작하신 이후로 부산과 한국의 의료관광은 어 떻게 변화해왔나요?
A. 저희 치과는 코로나가 한국에 퍼지기 시작한 직후에 개원했습니다. 그래서 외국인 숫자가 정말 많이 줄었어요. 하지만 치과 치료와 관련된 의료관광은 사회가 고령화되면서 치아 건강이 더 중요해짐에 따라 더욱 커 나갈 것이라고 생각합니다.

Q. What do you think the future of medical tourism will be at your hospital?
A. Medical tourism is a positive thing for us. It’s fantastic that foreigners can receive various medical services in Korea, where the quality of medical care is relatively high and the cost for treatment is low. For us, we are looking to continue to provide quality services that will draw patients to us.

Q. 온정성 치과의 의료관광의 미래는 어떠할 것으로 전 망하나요?
A. 의료관광은 저희에게 긍정적인 영향을 줍니다. 외국인들이 수준 높은 의료 수준과 비교적 저렴한 가격을 자랑하는 한국에서 의료 서비스를 받을 수 있다는 건 참 멋진 일이에요. 저희로서는 계속해서 환자분들이 찾을 수 있는 양질의 서비스를 제공할 것입니다.

Q. Do you have any outreach programs?
A. We are participating in a sharing project for the underprivileged in Suyoung-gu. In the future, we are planning to promote free medical treatment for the vulnerable in Suyeong-go.

Q. 봉사 활동도 하고 있나요?
A. 수영구 내 저소득층 가구를 위한 나눔 활동에 참여 하고 있습니다. 앞으로는 수영구 취약계층에게 무료 치료를 제공할 수 있도록 계획 중입니다.
