An interview with Gabrielle Atmajaya by Jacob Anziliero

Q. Can you first please detail what you do in relation to the football/soccer league?
축구 리그와 어떤 관련이 있는지 자세하게 말씀해 주세요.

A. I’m a data reporter/statistician, and I work for a sports data and technology company. The company provides data management, video streaming and integrity services to sports leagues, bookmakers and media companies. So what I do is I collect live play-by-play data and report it in real-time into the interface system. The company I work for is accredited for K3 and K4 League games in Korea, but since I can only cover games around my area, I’ve only been reporting for K3 Busan Transportation Corporation FC, and Gimhae City FC.

저는 데이터 리포터 겸 통계 전문가로, 스포츠 데이터 및 기술 회사에 근무합니다. 저희 회사는 데이터 관리, 영상 스트리밍 및 스포츠 리그, 마권업자, 미디어 회사를 위한 통합 서비스를 제공합니다. 제가 하는 일은 각 경기마다 실황 데이터를 취합하여 실시간 인터페이스 시스템에 보고하는 것입니다. 제가 다니는 회사는 한국 K3, K4 리그 승인을 받았는데, 저는 제 주변 지역의 경기만 취재할 수 있어서 K3 부산교통공사 FC와 김해시 FC만 을 담당해 왔습니다.

Q. How did you get involved in this position?
어떻게 이 일을 하게 되셨나요?

A. when I saw the ad that they were hiring on my timeline. I had  Honestly I was just bored and updating my LinkedIn profile no idea what a data statistician was, but I thought, why not? They interviewed me, and after going through 15 hours of training I failed my oral and practical test, so I had to redo about 5 more hours and fortunately I passed the second time and was sent straight to work!

솔직히 말해서, 타임라인에서 채용 공고를 본 저는 심심하던 찰나에 Linkedln 프로필을 업데이트 했습니다. 데이터 통계 전문가가 뭔지 전혀 몰랐지만, 그럼 뭐 어때 하는 생각을 했거든요. 회사와 면접을 마친 저는 15시간에 걸친 트레이닝을 받았으나 구술 및 실기 시험에는 낙제했어요. 그래서 5시간 가량을 더 투자한 후에야 두 번째 시험을 통과해 바로 업무에 투입되었습니다!

Q. Were you interested in football/soccer before you started?
일을 시작하기 전 축구에 관심이 있었나요?

A. I used to watch Chelsea FC games with my dad when I was younger, but I just got into it enthusiastically again in the last few years. I wouldn’t say I’m a superfan or anything, but I do like the sport very much.

어렸을 때 아버지와 함께 첼시 경기를 보곤 했는데, 최근 몇 년 사이 다시금 열정적인 팬이 되었습니다. 스스로를 열정팬이라고 말하지는 못하겠지만 스포츠를 아주 좋아하긴 합니다.

Q. How have the social distancing measures been impacting your work and the league in general?
사회적 거리두기 정책이 업무와 리그에 전반적으로 어떤 영향을 미쳤나요?

A. Luckily those haven’t impacted my work or the league in general. After my first game, the social distancing level was raised to Level 4, so for a while I was working at games behind closed doors. At the beginning I was a little bit worried but everything was fine as game schedules weren’t affected (at least for my games), and as long as I’m wearing my ID tag, I can go in and out the stadium as I please. The strict social distancing measures probably help with the players too, so no one tested positive or had to quarantine, etc. Even behind closed doors, ball boys and medical students were all there too, some important VIP guests showed up to watch the first half of matches a couple of times. There hasn’t been a time where attendance was over 10% of the stadium capacity, but frankly I don’t know if that’s because of the social distancing measures, or if it’s normally like that for K3 League games. Hopefully I’ll soon find out that it’s not the latter.

다행스럽게도 제 업무나 리그 전반에 영향을 주지 않았습니다. 첫 경기 후에 거리두기가 4단계로 격상되어서 한동안은 닫힌 문 너머에서 경기를 관람하며 일해야 했죠. 처음에는 걱정스러웠지만 경기 일정에는 지장이 없었고(적어도 제가 담당한 경기는 괜찮았습니다) 신분증을 매고 있는 한 원하는 대로 경기장을 드나들 수 있었기 때문에 별 문제가 없었어요. 엄격한 사회적 거리두기가 선수들에게도 도움이 된 것 같아요. 덕분에 양성 판정을 받거나 자가격리를 해야 했던 선수가 한 명도 없었어요. 닫힌 문 너머에도 볼보이들과 의대생들이 있었고, 중요한 VIP들이 종종 경기 전반을 보러 오기도 했습니다. 참가 관중 수가 경기장 관중 정원의 10% 이상을 넘긴 적이 없었지만, 솔직히 말씀드리자면 저는 그것이 사회적 거리두기의 영향인지, K3 리그의 평소 모습인지는 잘 모르겠습니다. 후자가 진실이 아니라는 것을 조만간 알 수 있기를 바랍니다.

Q. What contribution do you think a sports team makes to a city’s culture?
스포츠 팀이 한 도시의 문화에 이바지할 수 있는 부분이 무엇이라고 생각하나요?

A. I’m probably not experienced enough to be able to come up with an accurate opinion about this, but I think the obvious one is the togetherness it brings to local citizens. With the level 3 and 4 Covid-19 measures, it’s a bit hard to tell as the number of supporters inside the stadium is very low. Most of them are family members of the players, sitting very apart from the other groups of spectators. They are only there to take close-up photos and videos of their son, but when the team is close to scoring, or if another player in their team is fouled, everyone always reacts with the same flamed spirit. It’s interesting to see that an almost- empty stadium is just as loudly involved as a capacity stadium in a higher league. I find myself laughing sometimes when I see older fans slapping their knees and throwing their heads back in disappointment when the team’s shot was off target, or if the team loses ball possession. Once an away team scored a goal and I almost believed that it didn’t happen because all of the supporters there refused to react in any way and chose to not acknowledge that one moment of defeat.

이 질문에 정확한 의견을 드릴 수 있을 만큼 경험이 많지는 않지만, 시민들을 하나로 묶어주는 유대감이라고 생각합니다. 코로나로 인한 3, 4단계 거리두기를 겪는 동안 경기장 내 팬들의 수가 적어 정확히 말씀 드리기는 어렵네요. 다른 관중들과 상당히 떨어진 곳에 앉아있는 팬들의 대부분은 선수들의 가족입니다. 자녀들의 클로즈업 사진이나 영상을 찍는 데만 관심을 쏟다가도 점수가 날 만한 상황이 되거나 상대팀 선수가 파울을 당하면 모두가 열광적인 반응을 보여줍니다. 거의 텅 비다시피 했던 경기장이 관중들로 꽉 찬 상위 리그 경기장만큼 시끌벅적 할 수 있다는 건 참 신기한 일이에요. 응원하는 팀 의 슛이 빗나가거나 공을 빼앗길 때, 무릎을 치거나 고개를 뒤로 젖히며 실망감을 표현하시는 어르신 팬들을 보면 웃음이 나오기도 해요. 어웨이 팀이 골을 넣었을 때 어떻게든 반응하지 않고 패배의 순간을 인정하지 않으려는 팬들을 보고 있노라면 아무 일도 일어나지 않은 것 처럼 느껴지기도 해요.

Q. How does the stadium experience contribute to Busan’s cultural identity?
경기장에서의 경험이 부산 문화의 정체성에 어떤 공헌을 한다고 생각하세요?

A. Our company only assigns home reporters, so unfortunately I don’t have any experience with away games. But I can speak for the experience in Busan. The match announcer uses an enthusiastic, high-energy voice only for home players’ names, and a nonchalant voice for the away players’ names. The announcer makes no recognition for away goals, but constantly chants, “Goal! Goal! Goal!” during home corner kicks, and situations like this. I guess it shows that we’re all unified for at least the 90 minutes of the match, and it gives a sense of identity together as a group. It’s that notion of, yes, we’re from Busan, and this person next to me, who I don’t know, is now my friend, because they are from Busan too! I mean I’ve started caring and cheering more for Busan TC FC during now games now, and I’ve found myself paying more attention to the players on field. I never really cared before!

회사에서는 홈 경기에만 리포터를 배치하기 때문에 아쉽게도 저는 어웨이 경기를 경험해보지 못했어요. 하지만 부산에서의 경험에 대해서라면 말씀드릴 수 있겠네요. 경기장 아나운서들은 열정과 에너지 가득한 목소리로 홈 선수들의 이름만을 부르고, 어웨이 선수들을 부를 때는 자못 담담합니다. 어웨이 팀의 찬스에는 아무런 반응도 하지 않지만, 홈 팀이 공을 차거나 비슷한 상황이 되면 “골! 골! 골!”이라고 끊임없이 외쳐요. 이런 모습을 보면, 우리 모두는 적어도 90분의 경기 동안은 하나가 되어 공동체로서의 정체성을 느끼게 해 주는 것 같아요. 그렇다. 우리는 부산 사람이고, 아는 사람은 아니지만 내 옆사람도 부산 사람이니 우리는 이제 친구다! 이제는 저도 경기에서 부산 TC FC 축구팀을 더 신경 쓰고 응원하게 되었고, 필드에서 뛰고 있는 선수들에게 더 관심을 쏟게 되었습니다. 예전에는 전혀 상관 없었는데 말이죠!

Q. What are your goals for the team this season?
이번 시즌에서 팀의 목표는 무엇인가요?

A. As K3 League teams cannot be promoted to K2 League, I’d like to see Busan TC FC topping the league this season. There are only 4 more games left and they are only 6 points behind Cheonan City, and Gimpo Citizen, which share the highest points so far. I hope I get assigned for the last game too! I’ll be cheering Busan on while taking my notes!

K3 리그 팀들이 K2 리그로 승급할 수 없기 때문에, 부산 TC FC가 이번 시즌 리그의 선두를 달리고 있습니다. 현재 4경기만 남은 상태이고, 현재 선두인 천안시축구단 과 김포 FC와는 겨우 6점밖에 차이가 나지 않습니다. 마지막 경기를 배정받을 수 있기를 바라고 있어요!  기록을 하면서도 부산을 응원하고 있을 겁니다!
