Korea is known as the Land of the Morning Calm, but perhaps a better nickname for the country would be the Land of Seven Thousand Mountains. Not surprisingly many Koreans spend a lot of time hiking these mountains. Busan is a beautiful city and one of the many features of it, are the lush mountains that provide beauty, history, and a view of the city that can’t be obtained otherwise. Because of Busan’s more moderate climate, hiking can easily be done all year without special equipment, so if you’re eager to try some winter hiking or are just a warm weather hiker, here are four of the most popular destinations for hiking in Busan.

한국은 고요한 아침의 나라라고 알려져 있지만, 아마 한국에 더 잘 어울리는 별명은 칠천산의 나라가 아닐까 한다. 당연하게도 많은 한국인들이 등산을 즐긴다. 부산은 아름다운 도시다. 부산이 아름다운 여러 가지 이유 중 하나는 아름다움, 역사, 그리고 다른 도시에서는 볼 수 없는 울창한 산으로 이루어진 경치다. 부산의 온난한 기후 덕분에 특별한 장비 없이도 1년 내내 등산을 즐길 수 있다. 그러니 겨울 하이킹에 도전해보고 싶거나 따뜻한 날에 등산하는 것을 좋아한다면 여기 부산에서 가장 인기 있는 하이킹 코스 네 곳을 주목해라.

[Geumjeong Mountain 금정산]

Geumjeong Mountain is the highest peak in Busan. Topping 801 meters above the city it spans the border between Busan and Yangsan. The peak itself is full of history. Sitting atop of the mountain is the Geungjeong Mountain Fortress, which was built in response to the Japanese invasion of 1592, and the Manchu invasions of 1627 and 1637. Much of the fortress had been destroyed during the Japanese occupation; however restoration work has restored much of the fortress. The mountain is home to many temples, among them, Beomeosa on the mountain’s north-east side, Seokbulsa near the middle of the mountain, and many other smaller temples.

금정산은 부산에서 가장 높은 산이다. 도시 위 801미터 높이로 솟은 금정산은 부산과 양산의 경계에 걸쳐있다. 금정산은 봉우리 자체가 역사로 가득하다. 산 정상에는 1592년 임진왜란과 1637년 만주족의 침입에 대항하여 축조한 금정 산성이 있다. 산성 대부분은 일제강점기 동안 파괴되었지만 복원 작업을 통해 대부분 복구되었다. 북동쪽에 있는 범어사와 산 중턱에 있는 석불사를 비롯해 여러 사찰을 품고 있는 산이기도 하다.

Geumjeong Mountain can be a challenging hike depending on the starting point. If coming from the north-east, the best place to start is at Beomeosa. Take Bus 90 from Bemeosa Station (line 1) to the Beomeosa Temple Ticket Office. Another popular way is from Oncheonjang. Take the Dongnae-gu Villiage Bus 1-1 from Dongnae Station to the Geumjeong Park entrance. This way is
perhaps the easiest since there’s a cable car that will take hikers most of the way  to the top. Check out the famous Dongnae Pajeon street and try the Oncheonjang hot springs while there.

금정산은 어디서 출발하느냐에 따라 험난한 산행이 될 수도 있다. 북동쪽에서 시작한다면 가장 좋은 출발점은 범어사다. 1호선 범어사 역에 서 90번 버스를 타고 범어서사 매표소에서 하차하면 된다. 또 다른 인기 코스는 온천장에서 시작한다. 동래역에서 동래구 마을버스 1-1를 타고 금정공원입구에서 하차한다. 여기서 케이블카를 타고 거의 정상까지 올라갈 수 있어 가장 쉬운 코스라고 할 수 있다. 유명한 동래 파전 거리를 구경하고 온천장에서 온천욕을 즐겨보자.

[Jangsan 장산]

Located near Haeundae, Jangsan boasts beautiful views of the ocean. Reaching 634 meters at the top, views of Gwangan’s Diamond Bridge and Songjeong can be enjoyed. While this mountain does not have the history that other mountains may have, it does have its share of attractions and valleys, that people swim in during the summer. Jangsan Falls is a particularly photogenic place that is fairly accessible. Most hikers access the mountain through Daecheon Park just north of Jangsan station. Most hiking trails on this mountain are fairly easy, needing only an afternoon to get to the top. It is possible to access the mountain from Banyeo-dong, but this should only be done by more seasoned hikers, as this side is far steeper than other approaches.

해운대 인근에 위치한 장산은 아름다운 바다 전망을 자랑한다. 634미터에 이르는 정상에서는 광안대교와 송정을 볼 수 있다. 장산은 다른 산과 달리 역사를 품고 있지는 않지만 다양한 볼거리와 여름에 물놀이를 할 수 있는 계곡이 있다. 특히 장산 폭포는 간편한 접근성과 더불어 사진 찍기 좋은 명소다. 대부분의 등산객들은 장산역 바로 북쪽에 위치한 대천공원에서 시작한다. 장산 등산은 비교적 평이한 편이라 정상까지 오후 반나절이면 충분하다. 반여동에서도 올라갈 수 있지만 다른 루트보다 더 가파르기 때문에 보다 등산객의 숙련도를 필요로 한다.

Jangsan still has scars from the Korean War. Along the mountain are signs warning hikers of potential land mines. While most of them have been cleared, it’s vital to follow the signs and stay on the path in those areas. Also, at the peak there is an active military base. Photography of the base is prohibited, so turn your camera the other direction and take a photo of Gwangan instead. To reach Jangsan take bus 38 to Daerim #1 Apartments from Jangsan station and walk north about 650 meters.

장산에는 아직 한국 전쟁의 상처가 남아 있다. 산을 오르는 동안 지뢰가 남아있을 수 있다는 경고문을 만나게 된다. 대부분의 지뢰가 이미 제거되었지만 표지판에 따라 안전한 길을 걷는 것이 중요하다. 정상에는 현재도 군부대가 있다. 부대 촬영은 금지되어 있으므로 다른 방향으로 카메라를 돌려 광안리 사진을 찍도록 하자. 장산에 가려면 장산역에서 38번 버스를 타고 대림 1차 아파트에 하차한 뒤 북쪽으로 약 650미터 정도.

[Baegyang Mountain 백양산]

Baegyang Mountain sits between Buk-gu, Busanjin-gu and Sasang-gu. Stretching 612 meters, trails of thick pine trees and cypress line hiking paths that lead you to a view of the Nakdong River’s mouth. Like all the mountains listed here, Baegyang Mountain has its share of temples. Notable ones are Seonamsa and Unsusa. Perhaps the highlight of the mountain is the Aejinbong peak which is best viewed in the spring when the royal azaleas cover the landscape. At the top of the mountain is a stone pagoda. This pagoda contains the wishes of hikers who reached it in the past, so be sure to grab a stone and add it to the mound to add your wish. The hike itself is fairly easy and can be done in a morning or afternoon. The main trail starts from the Children’s Grand Park before passing through the Seongjigok Reservoir and finally reaching the peak. Take Bus 54, 63, 81 or 133 from Seomyeon Station (line 1) and get off at the Chilren’s Grand Park.

백양산은 북구, 부산진구, 사상구 사이에 있다. 612 미터로 뻗은 이 산에서는 소나무와 편백나무가 울창한 산책로를 따라 낙동강 하구를 조망할 수 있다. 여기서 소개하는 모든 산들처럼 백양산에도 사찰이 있다. 그 중 유명한 것은 선암사와 운수사다. 백양산의 하이라이트는 봄이면 철쭉으로 뒤덮인 장관을 선사 하는 애진봉일 것이다. 산 정상에는 석탑이 있다. 이 석탑은 과거 백양산 정상을 찾았던 등산객들의 소망을 담고 있다. 그러니 우리도 돌을 하나 집어 석탑 위에 올려 놓고 소원을 빌어보자. 등산 난이도는 상당히 쉬운 편이다. 오전 또는 오후 반나절이면 충분하다. 주요 루트는 어린이대공원에서 출발하여 성지곡 저수지를 지나 정상으로 가는 길이다. 1호선 서면역에서 54, 63, 81, 133번 버스를 타고 어린이대공원에서 하차하면 된다.

[Hwangnyeong Mountain 황령산]

While not the tallest mountain in Busan at 427 meters, Hwangnyeong Mountain and Geumnyeon Mountain are perhaps the most centrally located. Easily accessed from Suyeong, Geumnyeongsan, Kyungsung Uiversity, Mulmangol, Bujeon and Jeonpo stations, the twin mountains boast perhaps the most spectacular and panoramic view of the city. Adding to the view is the ease of hiking the mountain at night, following the mountain road the cuts through the center of the mountain, allowing for perhaps the best night time view of the entire city. Viewing platforms are built around the peak providing a view of Seomyeon and Gwangan. The location gets very crowded as it is a perfect location for a date or to simply bask in the view of the city.

427미터 높이의 황령산은 부산에서 가장 높은 산은 아니지만, 금련산과 더불어 부산 중심부에 가장 가까운 산이다. 수영, 금련산, 경성대, 물만골, 부전, 전포역에서 쉽게 갈 수 있는 이 쌍둥이산은 가장 극적이고 탁 트인 도시 전망을 자랑한 다. 전망뿐 아니라 산 중앙을 가로지르는 산길을 따라 밤에도 쉽게 등산할 수 있다는 장점을 갖추고 있다. 정상을 두르고 있는 전망대는 서면과 광안동을 조망할 수 있다. 데이트나 야경 감상에 최적인 장소인 이 전망대는 언제나 혼잡하다.

At the top of the mountain is the Bongsudae, a beacon fire station constructed in 1422. In the spring time, the Hwangyeon Mountain Road is lined on both sides with cherry blossoms which make the hike even more pleasant. The Geumnyeonsan Youth Training Center, which has events such as camping and an astronomical observatory is also there, and is open for hiking during the day time.

산 정상에는 1422년에 축조된 봉수대가 있다. 봄이 되면 산길 양쪽으로 벚꽃이 만개해 등산길에 기쁨을 더해준다. 금련산 청소년 수련원에서는 캠핑이나 천문대 관측이 가능하 고, 낮 동안 등산을 할 수 있도록 열려 있다.
