Why Busan is the Best Choice for World EXPO 2030
부산: 2030 세계박람회를 위한 최고의 선택지
Busan, South Korea is without doubt the best choice for World EXPO 2030. Now, many sceptics will begin to examine me-the writer of this bold statement. They will certainly question my expertise, my world travel experiences, and certainly my reasoning behind the statement. They may even question if I have connections with people who want Busan to win, and might reason that perhaps I was paid to voice my support for their city. I can guarantee you all that my opinion comes solely from my very own experiences and travel acumen. And so to begin this unfolding of my reasons for supporting Busan, I will delve into the noble adventure of world travel.
한국의 부산은 2030 세계박람회를 위한 최고의 선택이다. 이제, 많은 회의론자들이 필자의 이 대담한 부산 지지를 의심하기 시작할 것이다. 특히 독자들은 분명히 필자의 전문 지식, 세계 여행 경험, 그리고 기사의 내용에 의문을 제기할 것이라고 생각한다. 필자의 의견은 전적으로 주관적 경험과 여행 감각에서 나온다는 것을 거듭 말씀드리고자 한다. 그래서 부산을 지지하는 필자의 주장을 뒷받침하기 위해, 모험적인 세계 여행을 파고 들어가고자 한다.
World travel is like wine: it takes time, money, and educational experiences to become an expert. I spent a year and a half living in Morroco and the greatest story I heard about world travel was a story my Arabic professor told me about how the prophet Mohammad would choose his potential visitors.
Many potential guests would line up to get the chance to visit with him, and he would have his helpers weed out the guests with one question: Where in this big world have you been? I was told that most visitors would suddenly leave, with no hope of ever getting an invitation to meet Mohammad in person. This is because he wanted to be with people who knew about the world, and who could carry on truthful and experience based conversations with both accuracy and intellectual insight. He set the bar high, and many were sent away.
And so to begin I would like to say that I have been to well over 100 countries, and have been blessed to visit each of the potential candidate cities that are up for bid in the 2030 World Expo. And without a doubt I choose Busan. It is a no brainer that Busan should win the competition. The idiom 'no brainer' means that it is without a single doubt: an easy choice.
Now I will explain why. I have come up with an acronym for my reasons, and this acronym is 'SIGNS'. I will give five logical reasons why Busan, South Korea is indeed the best and only logical choice.
세계 여행은 마치 와인과 같다. 와인 전문가가 되기 위해서는 시간, 돈, 박식한 교육 경험이 필요하다. 필자는 모로코에서 1년 반을 유학하며 접한 흥미로운 이야기는 세계 여행 강의 중 아랍어 교수님이 말씀해주신 예언자 모하마드의 접객 방법에 대한 이야기였다.
모하마드를 보기위해 찾은 많은 손님들이 그를 방문하기 위해 줄을 섰고, 그의 조수들로 하여금 한 가지 원론적인 질문 손님들에게 던져 거르도록 했다: “당신은 이 큰 세상 중 어디에 있었습니까?” 대부분의 손님들은 모하마드를 직접 만날 수 있는 초대를 받을 희망도 없이 떠나게 된다. 왜냐하면 그는 세상에 대해 꿰뚫고 있고, 정확성과 지적 통찰력을 모두 가지고 진실하고 경험에 근거한 대화를 지속할 수 있는 사람들과 함께 하고 싶었기 때문이다. 그는 그 기준치를 높였고, 대부분은 탈락되었다.
이 이야기에 힘입어 필자는 100개가 훨씬 넘는 나라들을 방문했고 2030년 세계박람회 유치후보지를 방문한 것이 축복이었다고 말하고 싶다. 그리고 의심할 여지없이 필자는 부산을 선택할 것이다.
Safety 안전
Safety is the very first reason why Busan should win. It is without doubt that our lives and health are the most valuable things we possess. Busan is without doubt the safest city I have ever lived in. We must cross Odessa, Ukraine out of the competition because of the war. I loved my time visiting the great cities in Ukraine, but at this moment it is very dangerous. The war has devastated the whole safety factor for Odessa's bid.
부산이 승리해야 하는 첫 번째 이유는 안전이다. 인간의 생명과 건강이 우리 인간이 가질 수 있는 가장 가치 있는 선물이라는 것은 의심의 여지가 없다. 부산은 의심할 여지 없이 내가 살았던 도시 중 가장 안전한 도시다. 전쟁의 위험 때문에 우크라이나 오데사를 경쟁에서 제외시켜야 한다. 개인적으로 우크라이나의 위대한 도시들을 방문하는 시간을 좋아했지만, 현재는 위험성이 크다. 전쟁은 오데사의 세계박람회 유치를 위한 모든 안전 요소를 파괴시켰다.
Rome is also a very dangerous city. I have visited Rome over fifty times and have seen dangers such as accidents, robberies, and all types of crime both night and day. Just do a quick Google search 'tourist dies in Rome' and you will see for yourself the dangers of this city. There is also such a high-stress level walking everywhere in Rome because of the many pickpockets and con artists that have invaded the 'eternal city'. Restaurants trick tourists into spending extra cash on hidden fees. Even simple vendors have tricks up their sleeves.
로마 또한 매우 위험한 도시다. 로마를 50번 이상 방문했지만 사고, 강도, 그리고 모든 종류의 범죄와 위험을 밤낮으로 목격했다. '로마 사망 관광객'이라는 간단한 구글 검색만 해도 이 도시의 위험성을 직접 확인할 수 있다. 또한 이곳을 침입한 많은 소매치기들과 사기꾼들 때문에 방치된 도시 곳곳을 걷는 것은 위험하다. 식당들은 종종 관광객들에게 바가지를 씌우고, 소매업자들도 속임수를 쓴다.
Riyadh can be a very safe city, but there are indeed patches of shady places far from the city center. The center of Riyadh has very nice and expensive hotels, but for travelers on a budget, there is only cheap accommodation in the shady parts of town. These small hotels are near workshops, and dark streets, and are only accessible by taxis, which can be dangerous. Furthermore, Riyadh has very strict laws that could be potentially dangerous for careless tourists. I have great respect for Muslim culture, but one must heed the rules that govern each Muslim country, and it is no secret that many tourists have been put in jails and prisons for doing things that are perfectly normal in their home countries.
리야드는 매우 안전한 도시일 수 있지만, 실제로 도심에서 멀리 떨어진 음습한 곳이 있습니다. 리야드 중심가에는 아주 멋지고 비싼 호텔들이 있지만, 저렴한 숙박 시설은 도시의 외곽에 자리잡고 있다. 소규모 호텔들은 일터 가까이에 있지만 어두운 거리 근처에 있으며 택시로만 접근할 수 있는 위험한 곳에 있다. 게다가, 리야드는 부주의한 관광객들이라면 처벌받을 수 있는 매우 엄격한 법을 가지고 있다. 필자는 이슬람 문화를 매우 존경하지만 이슬람 국가들의 지배 규범에 주의해야 한다. 그들의 고국에서는 지극히 정상적인 행동들로 치부되는 것들로 투옥되는 것은 공공연히 알려진 사실이다.
I believe Busan is the safest city in the competition. Transportation in the city is as easy as pie. Busan is surrounded by easy and safe transportation systems that are very clean and economical. There are safe streets made for pedestrians of all ages, and even well-chartered police boxes and police stations with highly educated and top-of-the-line police officers who truly want to help tourists in times of need. I have walked all hours of the night in Busan for years and years, and have never had one problem. And if there ever was a problem Busan has a secret weapon that I call the 'Busan citizen safety net'. The residents of Busan are so kind and full of a giant love for tourists! Busses and subways, walkways, and restaurants are always going to be full of good people who will gladly help in any crisis. This is a major reason why Busan is the best choice for the 2030 World Expo!
부산이 이 대격돌에서 가장 안전한 도시라고 생각한다. 부산은 매우 깨끗하고 경제적이고 쉽고 안전한 교통 시스템으로 둘러싸여 있다. 부산에서 몇 년 동안 살며 밤을 새워 산책했지만 단 한 번도 문제가 생긴 적이 없다. 설령 문제가 생긴다면 '부산시민 안전망'이라고 부르는 비밀 무기가 있다. 부산의 주민들은 매우 친절하고 관광객에게 호의적이다! 버스와 지하철, 산책로와 식당은 항상 어떤 위기에서도 기꺼이 도와줄 좋은 사람들로 가득하다. 이것이 2030년 세계박람회에서 부산이 최고의 선택지인 이유 중 하나다!
Inclusiveness 포괄성
The second letter of my acronym is 'I' for inclusiveness. I love this word which originally meant 'including all and leaving little out'. Busan is indeed the most inclusive city on the list. To be the host of a world exposition means making sure all types of people have a good time. All visitors must be made to feel welcome and at home. Busan is a city of Buddhists, Christians and Muslims, atheists- and just about every religion under the sun.
두 번째 글자는 'I'다. 필자는 '모든 것을 포함하고 거의 빠뜨리지 않는다'는 뜻의 이 단어를 애정한다. 부산은 후보지 중 가장 포용적인 도시다. 세계박람회의 개최자가 된다는 것은 모든 유형의 사람들을 기쁘게 해야 한다는 것을 의미한다. 모든 방문객들은 환영 받아야 한다. 부산은 불교도, 기독교도, 이슬람교도, 무신론자, 그리고 태양 아래 있는 거의 모든 종교의 도시다.
In many Muslim countries, there is what is called 'Haram' which are certain rules all visitors must live by. One example is the prohibited use of alcohol. I think that Germans, French, English, as well as all Europeans, South Americans, North Americans, and most of the world would go crazy going to a giant world event with no alcohol. We all saw the pains of football fans at the recent world cup in Qatar as they tried to buy beer. A global consumer fact is that the major parts of the world adore alcohol, especially at entertainment events. This is where Korea comes in. Korea is a superpower of nightlife and fun. This city has many bars and venues for drinkers at reasonable prices. And, on the other side of the coin, there are many family venues for nondrinkers. I believe that giving visitors a choice is the greatest policy in hosting such an important world event. Busan will make certain that all visitors are accepted, and will have no fears of being disrespected because of beliefs or culture. And this inclusive attitude will ensure millions of diverse visitors will indeed have the time of their lives!
많은 이슬람 국가들에는 '하람'이라고 불리는 것이 있는데, 이것은 모든 방문객들이 반드시 지켜야 하는 특정한 규칙이다. 한 가지 예는 금지된 술의 사용이다. 필자는 독일인, 프랑스인, 영국인뿐만 아니라 모든 유럽인,남미인, 북미인, 그리고 사실 술 없이 거대한 세계 행사에 열광해야 함을 알고 있다. 최근 카타르 월드컵에서 축구팬들이 맥주를 사려고 할 때 그들이 고통스러워 한 것을 알 수 있다. 세계 소비자 대부분은 주요 지역들에서 즐기는 행사에 술이 빠지지 않는다는 것을 안다. 이것이 부산에 방문해야 할 이유다: 밤 문화와 큰 재미를 가진 도시다. 부산은 매우 합리적인 가격에 세계적인 수준의 술집과 술을 마시는 사람들을 위한 장소가 많다. 동시에, 술을 마시지 않는 사람들을 위한 많은 가족 행사장이 있다. 필자는 방문객들에게 선택권을 주는 것이 이렇게 중요한 세계 행사를 개최하는 데 있어 가장 큰 요인이라고 생각한다. 부산은 모든 방문객들을 받아들이고, 신앙과 문화로 인한 무시를 하지 않을 것이다. 그리고 이러한 포용적인 태도는 수백만 명의 다양한 방문객들이 정말로 그들의 삶 속의 시간을 보장 받을 것이다!
Global Power 글로벌 파워
The third letter in my acronym is 'G' for Global Power. The host of such a major event must be able to bring in people from all over the world and accommodate them. Rome is a very accessible city, but Riyadh is isolated from many parts of the world. Imagine tourists from South America or Asia trying to get to Riyadh. Flights will be complicated and expensive. Busan on the other hand is an international hub that caters to all world travelers. There are budget airlines that can whisk people from all around Asia directly to the doorsteps of Busan. Busan also has a port that can bring in ferries and ships with comfort and ease. An added advantage is that citizens from larger cities across the world can easily fly into Seoul, rest for a day, and then take the KTX to Busan in a matter of hours. This will give visitors a lucky chance to see two wonderful South Korean cities. South Korea is indeed a center for world travel. I have flown from European cities, African cities, and even South American cities into both Seoul and Busan-comfortably and efficiently.
세 번째 글자는 Global Power의 'G'. 이러한 중요한 글로벌 행사의 주최자는 전 세계 사람들을 불러들이고 수용할 수 있어야 한다. 로마는 매우 접근하기 쉽지만, 리야드는 세계의 많은 지역으로부터 고립되어 있다. 남아메리카나 아시아에서 온 관광객들이 리야드에 가려고 한다고 상상해보아라. 항공편은 복잡하고 엄청나게 비싸다. 반면에 부산은 세계의 여행자들을 위한 국제적인 중심지다. 아시아 전역의 사람들을 부산의 문 앞까지 바로 데려다 줄 수 있는 저가 항공사들이 있다. 부산에도 여객선과 선박을 편안하고 쉽게 들여올 수 있는 항구가 있다. 또 다른 장점은 전 세계 대도시의 시민들이 쉽게 서울로 날아와 하루 쉬고 몇 시간 만에 부산행 KTX를 탈 수 있다는 것이다. 이것은 방문객들에게 두 개의 멋진 한국 도시를 볼 수 있는 행운의 기회를 줄 것이다. 한국은 정말로 세계 여행의 중심지다. 필자는 유럽의 도시들, 아프리카의 도시들, 그리고 심지어 남미의 도시들에서 서울과 부산으로 편안하고 효율적으로 날아왔다.
Busan is also a global hub for IT and international communications.
The people of Busan proved their global superpower skills during the 2002 FIFA World Cup. I was one of the attendees and was impressed with how well the residents spoke English and accommodated visitors. Not only that, but many of Busan's residents speak Chinese and Japanese. There are French, German, and Arabic learning schools in Busan, and I have never seen a city in this world more equipped for international communications. If there are any problems with translations, tourists will find answers to any problems with Busan's super wifi network which inhabits every inch of the city. No place in Busan is without efficient IT services for phones, laptops, and computers.
Thousands of PC rooms and internet cafes offer cheap and efficient services 24 hours a day. I still remember trying to find a place to print my bus tickets in Rome last summer-the local bus outlet would not accept paperless tickets. It was nearly impossible to find any kind of print services and even wifi services in both Riyadh and Rome. I was often offline in both cities, and it was so frustrating because citizens in Rome and Riyadh have very limited English abilities.
Busan is the superpower of hightech and global communications- this is without a doubt why the world expo needs to be here!
부산은 또한 IT와 국제 통신의 세계적인 중심지다.
부산 사람들은 2002년 한일월드컵 기간 동안 그들의 세계 정상급 기술을 보였다. 필자도 이를 직접 즐겼고, 특히 주민들이 영어를 잘하고 방문객들을 잘 맞이하는 것에 감명 받았다. 뿐만 아니라 부산의 많은 주민들이 중국어와 일본어를 구사한다. 부산에는 프랑스어, 독일어, 아랍어 학습학교가 있는데, 이보다 더 국제적인 소통 능력을 갖춘 도시를 본 적이 없다. 게다가, 만약 소통에 문제가 있다면, 관광객들은 단번에 해결책을 제시한다. 부산에서 전화, 노트북, 컴퓨터 등의 효율적인 IT 서비스를 제공하지 않는 곳이 없다.
또한 하루 24시간 저렴하고 효율적인 서비스를 제공하는 수천 개의 PC방과 인터넷 카페가 있다. 필자는 지난 여름 로마에서 버스 티켓을 인쇄할 장소를 찾아다녔던 것을 아직도 기억한다. 지역 버스는 종이 없는 티켓을 받지 않았고, 리야드와 로마에선 인쇄 서비스, 심지어 와이파이 서비스도 거의 찾을 수 없었다. 두 도시 모두 인터넷이 제한된 경우가 많았는데, 로마와 리야드의 시민들은 영어 능력이 매우 제한적이라 꽤 답답했다.
부산은 첨단 기술과 세계적인 커뮤니케이션의 초강대국이다. 이것이 바로 세계 박람회가 이곳에 있어야 하는 이유다!
Nature 자연
A world expo needs to be close to beautiful natural settings that give visitors needed peace and a feeling of relaxation. While Riyadh and Rome both have spectacular parks, hotels, and shopping areas, there is always the feeling of being boxed in. Riyadh has beaches but they are isolated and sometimes hard to get to. The weather can be a major down point as well since the city is in a vast desert that has extreme temperatures and windstorms. Rome has no nearby beaches that tourists can access, and taking buses and taxis is both stressful and expensive. Busan on the other hand is blessed with a magnificent array of beaches a short bus or subway ride away. Going to the beach is one of the glories of visiting Busan! Not only are the beaches accessible, but they are safe and full of economical restaurants and stores that make any day a holiday. A tourist can find economical snacks and drinks 24/7 at the myriad of convenience stores near most beaches. And if a person does not like the ocean, there are always beauiful Korean mountains just a short bus or subway ride away. I love hiking the hills and mountains of Busan. A bonus is the fact that there are hundreds of great little restaurants along the way; serving the greatest Korean delicacies that the world needs to taste! Busan is indeed a city with the greatest natural escapes and treasures that will give all visitors to the expo a bonus of peace, beauty, relaxation, and pleasure!
세계박람회는 방문객들에게 편안한 평화와 휴식의 느낌을 주는 아름다운 자연 환경에 가까이 있을 필요가 있다. 리야드와 로마는 둘 다 멋진 공원, 호텔, 쇼핑 지역을 가지고 있지만, 고립된 느낌이 있다. 리야드에는 해변이 있지만, 그들은 고립되어 있고 때때로 접근하기가 어렵다. 또 극심한 고온과 모래 폭풍을 가진 광대한 사막에 있기 때문에 날씨도 감점 요인이 될 수 있다. 로마에는 관광객들이 접근할 수 있는 해변이 근처에 없고, 버스와 택시를 타는 것은 불편하고 비용이 많이 든다. 반면에 부산은 버스나 지하철을 타고 조금만 가면 멋진 해변들이 늘어서 있는 그런 축복을 받은 곳이다. 부산의 해변을 방문하는 것은 영광스러운 일이다! 해변 뿐 아니라, 안전하고 경제적인 식당과 가게들로 즐비해서 휴일을 즐길 수 있다. 관광객들은 대부분의 해변 근처에 있는 수많은 편의점에서 24시간 내내 합리적인 금액의 간식과 음료를 살 수 있다. 바다를 좋아하지 않더라도, 버스나 지하철을 타고 조금만 가면 아름다운 산들이 반겨줄 것이다. 필자는 부산의 언덕과 산을 즐겨오른다. 보너스는 길을 따라 수백 개의 훌륭한 작은 식당들이 있는 건 덤이다. 세계인이 맛 봐야 할 한국의 훌륭한 진미를 느낄 수 있다! 부산은 정말로 엑스포를 방문하는 모든 방문객들에게 평화, 아름다움, 휴식, 그리고 즐거움의 보너스를 줄 최고의 자연과 보물을 가진 도시다!
Seduction 마력
The final letter in my acronym is 'S' for Seduction! This is perhaps the strongest argument for why the 2030 Expo must be in Busan. The etymology of this word comes from the words 'to lead, to entice'. Busan's worldwide attraction and global entertainment leadership is insurmountable compared to any of the other contestants. The world is presently in love with South Korea. Name one television series that comes out of Italy, Saudia Arabia, or Ukraine. Name one specialty dish from Riyadh or Odessa; name one popular pop band or entertainer in any of the three competing countries. The truth is the fact that Busan is a superstar, and all of the world is longing to visit this beautiful city that is home to world-famous K-pop groups, Netflix movies, high-end restaurants, and just sheer energy and attraction! Busan will give the citizens of this world the greatest entertainment of their lives. The seduction of Busan will attract millions of young people in love with BTS and Black Pink; and even middle-aged lovers of Korean world-famous dramas. Visitors will be able to indulge in a feast of sights, sounds, tastes, and entertainment! If Busan hosts the 2030 World Expo there will certainly be countless more visitors and attendees compared to the less glamorous and less tourist-friendly cities of Odessa, Rome, and Riyadh.
마지막으로는 유혹의 'S'다! 이것은 아마도 2030 세계박람회가 왜 부산에 개최되어야 하는지에 대한 강력한 주장일 것이다. 이 단어의 어원은 ' 이끌다, 꾀다'라는 단어에서 왔다. 부산의 세계적인 매력과 세계적인 엔터테인먼트 리더십은 다른 어떤 경쟁자들과 비교해도 손색이 없다. 세계는 현재 한국을 사랑하고 있다. 이탈리아, 사우디 아라비아 또는 우크라이나에서 방영되는 텔레비전 시리즈 중 하나의 이름을 대보아라. 리야드나 오데사의 특별한 요리 이름을 대보아라; 경쟁하는 세 나라의 인기 있는 팝 밴드나 연예인 이름을 대보아라. 사실 부산은 슈퍼스타이고 전 세계가 세계적으로 유명한 케이팝 그룹, 넷플릭스 영화, 고급 레스토랑, 그리고 순수한 에너지와 매력이 있는 이 아름다운 도시를 방문하기를 갈망하고 있다! 부산은 이 세상의 시민들에게 그들의 인생에서 가장 큰 즐거움을 줄 것이다. 부산의 유혹은 BTS와 블랙핑크와 사랑에 빠진 수백만의 젊은이들을 끌어들일 것이고, 심지어 한국의 세계적으로 유명한 드라마의 중년의 연인들도 끌어들일 것이다. 부산이 2030년 세계박람회를 개최한다면 오데사, 로마, 리야드 같은 덜 화려하고 덜 관광객 친화적인 도시들에 비해 훨씬 더 많은 방문객과 참석자들이 있을 것이 분명하다.
Superior World City 세계 일류 도시
I have given five powerful 'SIGNS' why Busan should host the 2030 World Expo. My only fear is the fact that sometimes judges can make decisions with bias, or even economic persuasions. I truly believe that Busan is 'Cinderella' in this competition, and if she wins, the many crowds of global visitors will make the 2030 World Expo the greatest Expo in the history of the world. The decision will be announced this November, and I hope and pray that the judges can see the glories of this wonderful city, and give the world the chance to walk the streets and beaches of one of the most modern, friendly, and superior cities this world has ever known: Busan, South Korea.
FIGHTING!
부산이 2030년 세계박람회를 개최해야 하는 이유에대해 강력한 다섯 가지 '징표(SIGNS)'를 나열했다. 필자의 유일한 걱정거리는 편협된 주장이나 경제적인 손익계산으로 개최지 결정을 내릴 수 있다는 것이다. 필자는 부산이 이 대회의 ‘신데렐라’라고 진심으로 믿고 있고, 만약 그녀가 우승한다면, 많은 세계 방문객들이 2030 세계박람회를 세계 역사상 가장 위대한 박람회로 만들 것이다. 그 결정은 올 11월에 발표될 것이고, 심사위원들이 이 멋진 도시의 영광을 볼 수 있고, 세계가 이 세상에서 가장 현대적이고, 우호적이며, 가장 우수한 도시 중 하나인 한국의 부산의 거리와 해변을 걸을 수 있는 기회를 줄 수 있기를 바라고 기도한다.
