Here I sit at the famous Dukes Hotel in London. My mind is full of joy as I have just visited the British Museum and discovered how a genius Frenchman deciphered Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Speaking of geniuses, I have come to this special bar to celebrate one of the greatest characters in the history of literature: James Bond. Ian Fleming came to this very same bar to write his famous series, and of course it is the home of the famous Vesper Martini.

The bartender has just left me after making one of his masterpieces, and my mind is stirring as I begin to actually miss South Korean food. Koreans can relate to this feeling. In my life there always comes a time when my soul is missing the main staple of Korean cuisine: Kimchi. I long for it as I sip my martini, and then an idea comes to me...What if James Bond were to visit Busan, South Korea for 72 hour?

James Bond is known for his love of life, love of adventure, and of course his love of luxury. Busan could indeed be one of his playgrounds, with all of the special facets that most of the rich and famous are looking for; and yet Busan has been ignored for years and years by the media and luxury travel magazines. But why?

What is the criteria for becoming a playground for the rich and famous? As I remember my own luxury travels I can name only a handful of cities that truly pass the test. And all of those inside the elite 'A' list cities are missing certain elements that Busan has. My mind begins a journey around the world to figure this question out.

So what do the world's wealthiest travelers want?
After years of world travel and living in top cities, I am certain that I have figured out this million dollar question.
The first is safety: The wealthy must protect their lives. The second is comfort: Wealthy people hate the noise and bothers of the common people. Third on my list is fine accommodations: Luxury hotels are indeed a top priority. Next is beauty. There must be scenic views of mountains or lakes or beaches that comfort the soul. Many psychologists agree that being near water creates a peaceful mind and spirit, and wealthy tourists are drawn to cities with nearby scenes of nature.
Of extreme importance is shopping: Wealthy people love to spend money on luxury brands. They adore Channel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, and the list could go on and on. Adventure is next, as many millionaires love a good fishing trip or even the hunting of wild animals. Fine cuisines is a must, and finally highbrow art and intellectual stimulation. There we have it, in a nutshell. The wants and needs of the high class world, which includes the great James Bond himself.
그렇다면 세상에서 가장 부유한 여행자들이 원하는 건 무엇일까?
여러 해 동안 세계를 여행하고 최고의 도시들을 경험해 본 나는 이 백만 달러짜리 질문에 대한 답을 알아냈다고 확신한다.
첫 번째는 안전이다. 부유한 이는 자신의 생명을 보호해야만 한다. 두 번째는 위안이다. 부유한 이는 서민들의 소음과 성가신 일들을 싫어한다. 세 번째는 멋진 숙박시설이다. 호화 호텔은 분명 최우선 순위에 올라 있다. 그 다음은 아름다움이다. 영혼을 어루만지는 산이나 호수, 해변의 경치가 있어야만 한다. 많은 심리학자들은 물가에 있는 것이 정신과 마음을 평화롭게 하며, 부유한 관광객들이 자연과 가까운 도시에 끌린다는 데 동의한다.
또 한 가지 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 요소는 쇼핑이다. 부유한 사람들은 럭셔리 브랜드를 즐겨 소비한다. 샤넬, 루이비통, 구찌, 프라다, 그 외에도 끊임없이 이어지는 목록들을 사랑한다. 그리고 모험. 수많은 백만장자들이 낚시 여행이나 야생 동물 사냥을 즐긴다. 훌륭한 요리는 필수인데다, 마지막으로는 고급 예술과 지적 유희도 필요하다. 간단히 말해 바로 우리가 갖고 있는 것이다. 위대한 제임스 본드 본인을 포함한 상류층의 욕구와 니즈를 충족시킬 바로 그것.
The List

And so now we must look at the list of those special cities that are in the 'VIP' club. Monte Carlo is certainly on the list as well as famous French cities such as Nice and Paris. Italy has famous cities such as Milan, Venice, Rome, and of course the famous cities surrounding lake Como- where movie stars flock to in droves and live out their enchanted lives. And we must not forget about the islands of Greece, Islands of the Caribbean, and certainly the island of Manhattan. Asia too is full of great cities as well, such as famous playgrounds in Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and Macao. In all of these cities we find all of the wants and needs of the wealthy class. But what makes me disappointed is the fact that a city like Busan is often never mentioned nor put on any list. In honest truth, after having visited all of these places, I find that Busan can stand along with them with confidence and pride. I am certain that James Bond could indeed have a better time in Busan than most of the overrated luxury cities. Let us take a quick scientific analysis of Busan, and you will see what I mean.
이제 ‘VIP’ 클럽에 속한 특별한 도시들을 살펴보자. 몬테카를로는 프랑스의 그 유명한 니스나 파리와 더불어 분명히 목록에 포함되어 있다. 이탈리아에는 밀라노, 베니스, 로마와 같은 유명 도시가 있고, 영화배우들이 모여 살며 매혹적인 생활을 향유하는 코모 호수 주변에도 여러 도시들이 있다. 그리스와 카리브해의 섬들은 물론 맨해튼을 잊어서도 안 된다. 아시아에도 말레이시아, 태국, 일본, 마카오 등 유명한 곳들이 많다. 이 모든 도시들에는 부유층의 욕구와 니즈가 녹아 있다. 하지만 실망스럽게도 부산과 같은 도시는 목록에 올라 있지 않다. 솔직히 말해, 이 모든 곳들을 방문한 뒤 나는 부산도 자신감과 자부심을 가지고 이 도시들과 나란히 할 수 있다는 것을 깨달았다. 제임스 본드도 분명 과대평가 된 대부분의 도시보다 부산을 더 즐길 수 있을 것이다. 부산에 대해 과학적 분석을 해 보자. 그러면 내가 무슨 말을 하는지 그 의미를 알게 될 것이다.
A Top Luxury City

Busan is safe, and has much lower crime than 95 percent of the top Jet set cities. Busan is full of luxury hotels, on secluded beaches, offering privacy and comfort, and indeed glorious beauty! Take a walk to Beamosa temple in late autumn or spring, walk along one of the many isolated Busan beaches in winter or summer, and you will agree that Busan's natural assets are on par with the current top luxury travel destination hotspots.
Shopping in Busan is also a glorious endeavor. Giant shopping malls full of top luxury brands have for years satisfied many a wealthy tourist time and time again. Adventure is also available and is indeed Busan's second name! James Bond would relish the variety and certainly delve into it! Fishing and world class sports give all adventure seekers like Bond countless hours of heart wrenching action. Hiking and rock climbing and, ice skating and world class stadiums- fill visitors with nonstop entertainment! Casinos and movie theaters and high-class art museums and galleries top off the golden list. Now you can see my frustrated outlook. Is the global media blind? Furthermore, there is something missing in each one of the top ranked luxury cities, something that the city of Busan has that illuminates her glory more than all of the rest-and something that would captivate James Bond's personal impulsive desires. But first let’s scratch the surface of the highest-ranking cities and expose their reality.
부산은 제트족 도시의 95%보다 범죄율이 훨씬 낮은 안전한 도시다. 한적한 해변에 고급 호텔이 즐비한 부산은 프라이버시, 편안함과 더불어 눈부신 아름다움을 선사한다. 늦가을이나 봄에는 범어사를 산책하고, 겨울이나 여름에는 외딴 해변들 중 한 곳을 걸어보자. 그러면 부산의 자연이 현존하는 최고의 호화 여행지에 전혀 뒤처지지 않는다는 사실을 알게 될 것이다.
부산에서의 쇼핑도 후회하지 않을 것이다. 최고의 호화 브랜드로 가득한 대형 쇼핑몰들은 부유한 관광객들이 몇 번이고 부산을 찾게 만들었다. 부산에서 즐길 수 있는 모험도 두말하면 잔소리다. 제임스 본드는 부산에서 수많은 모험을 조우하고 기꺼이 파고들 것이다! 낚시와 세계적 수준의 스포츠는 본드와 같은 모험가들에게 가슴 졸이는 액션을 수없이 선사한다. 등산, 암벽등반, 아이스스케이팅, 세계적 수준의 경기장까지. 끊임없는 엔터테인먼트로 가득하다. 카지노, 영화관, 고품격 미술관과 갤러리도 빼놓을 수 없다. 이제 내가 얼마나 화가 났는지 느껴질 것이다. 전세계의 미디어는 눈이 먼 걸까? 게다가 상위권에 이름을 올린 호화 도시는 저마다 무언가가 결여되어 있다. 제임스 본드라는 개인의 충동적 욕망을 사로잡을 만한, 그 어떤 도시보다도 빛나는 이곳 부산만이 가지고 있는 무언가 말이다. 일단은 가장 높은 순위에 이름을 올린 도시들을 훑어보고 그들의 현실을 폭로해 보겠다.
Reality Hurts

A famous writer once wrote that, "When a man is tired of London- he is tired of life". And yet after having lived in London I always found myself bored after only a few days. The same goes for Monte Carlo and Nice. I remember nights of deep disappointment as these famous places shut down after midnight. I went to a famous Greek island where one of the casino scenes in an old James Bond movie was filmed. The whole island was shut down at ten PM each night! Last summer in Bellagio, on Lake Como, my friends and I had nothing to do past midnight but to go back to our hotel and wait until sunrise when the cafes and fine restaurants opened up again.
The same goes for Manhattan. The supposed city that 'never sleeps'. What a joke! I remember walking the famous luxury lined streets at two in the morning with friends- laughing at those famous inaccurate words-because nothing was open. Manhattan goes to bed and shuts everything down, as does Paris, famous Islands of Greece, the Caribbean, European power cities, and all the famous cities I have been to on the African continent from Tangier, to the famous streets of Cape Town! Boredom!
어느 유명한 작가가 말하길, “런던에 싫증이 난 사람은 인생에 싫증이 난 사람이다.” 하지만 런던에 살게 된 나는 겨우 며칠 만에 싫증이 나 버렸다. 몬테카를로와 니스에서도 마찬가지였다. 자정이 지나 그 유명한 장소들은 모두 문을 닫았고, 나는 깊은 실망감과 함께 여러 밤을 보냈다. 제임스 본드 영화에 나오는 유명한 카지노 장면 중 하나가 촬영된 그리스의 어느 섬을 방문했을 때였다. 섬 전체가 매일 밤 10시면 문을 닫는다는 게 아닌가! 코모 호수 벨라지오에서 지난 여름을 보냈을 때는 자정이 넘으면 아무 것도 할 일이 없어 친구와 호텔로 돌아가 카페와 식당이 문을 여는 아침까지 기다릴 뿐이었다.
‘잠들지 않는’ 도시라고 알려진 맨해튼에서도 상황은 똑같았다. 얼마나 우스운 일인지! 새벽 두 시에 친구들과 함께 호화스럽게 줄지은 거리를 걸었지만, 잠들지 않는 도시라는 표현에는 웃을 수밖에 없었다. 그 어떤 가게도 열려있지 않았으니까. 맨해튼은 잠이 들고 모든 것은 문을 닫는다. 파리도, 그리스의 유명 섬들도, 카리브해도, 유럽의 대도시들도, 탕헤르와 케이프타운에 이르는 아프리카 대륙의 대도시들도 모두! 지루하다!

I will now tell you why James Bond would relish Busan over the often fake cliche cities of the 'rich and famous': Busan has a never ending night life! In fact, the first crown jewel of Busan, besides her beaches, luxury malls, and succulent cuisines, is indeed her priceless night life! Now, if you are an expat who has lived in Busan and experienced this giant diamond of wealth first hand, you would certainly agree with me.
The bistros and bars and nightclubs and casinos are alive all hours of the night. And anytime one feels the need for a luxurious feast of raw fish, or Korean world famous BBQ Bulgogi, any taxi driver will instantly escort you to a brightly lit oasis-where you can indulge in the greatest feasts on earth- even in the earliest hours of morning. It is impossible for any visitor to get bored in Busan! And this leads us to the second crown jewel that James Bond would relish, literally.
이제 제임스 본드가 ‘돈 많은 유명인’들이 찾는다고 클리셰처럼 알려진 가짜 도시들보다 부산을 좋아할 이유에 대해 말해보고자 한다. 바로 끝나지 않는 밤이다! 사실, 아름다운 해변, 고급 쇼핑몰, 맛있는 음식 외에 부산의 첫 번째 진가를 찾자면 바로 이 엄청난 밤문화를 꼽을 수 있다. 만약 당신이 부산에 살면서 이 엄청난 보석을 직접 겪어본 외국인이라면 내 말에 동의할 수밖에 없을 것이다.
식당, 바, 나이트클럽과 카지노는 밤새도록 활기가 넘친다. 고급 생선회나 세계적으로 잘 알려진 한국식 불고기를 먹고 싶다면, 아무리 이른 아침이라 할지라도 택시만 타면 빛나는 오아시스가 반겨줄 것이다. 세상에서 가장 큰 축제가 벌어지는 바로 그 오아시스로 말이다. 누구든 부산에서 지루함을 느낀다는 건 있을 수 없는 일이다! 그리고 이것은 말 그대로 제임스 본드가 좋아할 두 번째 보석으로 이어진다.

We all know the famous words by Shakespeare...all that glitters is not gold. But I prefer the not so famous words of truth: All Gold does not glitter- to explain Busan's current situation of being ignored by the media, and of course the second reason why James Bond would relish this amazing city.
Korean cuisine is the craze around the top ranked luxury cities of the world at the moment. Restaurants in London, Paris, New York, and Rome, are serving traditional Busan feasts for the wealthiest elite clients. I have seen typical Bulgogi feasts that in Busan sell for 100,000 won going for up to twenty times this price. And most of these restaurants in the well-known upscale luxury cities shrivel in comparison to even the average Busan Steak house. The fact is that the local Busan cuisine is the best in the world, and thus the second crown jewel of the city.
셰익스피어가 남긴 유명한 말이 있다. 반짝이는 모든 것이 금은 아니다. 하지만 나는 그다지 유명하지 않지만 진실을 전하는 이 말을 더 좋아한다. 금이라고 모두 다 반짝이는 것은 아니다. 미디어가 외면하는 부산의 현재 상황을 설명하고 그리고 제임스 본드가 왜 이 경이로운 도시를 사랑할 수밖에 없는지 밝히기 위해서다.

We all love to eat, and so does a well-traveled luxury loving adventurer like James Bond. On a quick side note, the same fame and high prices go for other Busan foods as well. A typical raw fish feast in Los Angeles for two people (complete with soju and Korean beer), can cost more than a thousand dollars! Even a simple bowl of Bipimbop in London's famous dining areas can sell for upwards of twenty pounds. My point is this: Busan's glorious food scene is not only world class, but is also something that the wealthiest world travelers seek,
Travelers could fly to Busan and enjoy a luxurious trip of fine dining and adventure for the same price as eating a few times at their local Korean restaurant. And with this second crown jewel in mind, I set the playground, and now start a luxurious 72 hour tour of pleasure for the world's greatest bachelor: James Bond.

Especially in a city as safe as Busan, where the rich and famous have no worries at all, but can walk and dine and spend money freely with never a thought of harm.

Busan is home to many world class Bistros, with famous views of the city, and spectacular wine collections. Bond would take a VIP taxi to Dalmagi Hill and enter one of the elegant establishments, order his favorite Vesper Martini, and sit in comfort overlooking the glorious city that truly never sleeps.

He would listen to the live band, watching the illuminated city below, in absolute comfort-yet feeling a little lonely. But then, suddenly, he would see an old lover enter the bistro, the woman he longed for, and who had been secretly tracking him from London. Bond would smile as she elegantly walks to his table, in her radiant Channel red evening dress, and his smile would grow wider as he smells her captivating perfume: for now he has a glorious companion, to indulge with him in the highest class pleasures of the world!
