Seeking to slake a thirst only a quenching cold one can conquer? There are more options in South Korea than ever before.

 Since the turn of the decade, an explosion of international beer choices began to occupy supermarket and convenience store shelves. Even more recently, however, thanks to the relaxation of strict laws that once required companies to produce one million liters of beer annually before going to market, more and more humble Korea-based craft brewers are producing and selling sensational suds. While the trend first flourished in Seoul, craft beer has since also taken hold throughout Busan.

  Nowhere has the craft caught fire faster in the country’s second-largest city than in the Gwangalli Beach area. Besides several breweries calling Gwangan home, many tap houses, restaurants and pubs have also begun to offer a pleasing variety of India Pale Ales, sour ales and saisons for an evolving, discerning palate.

  10여 년 전부터, 세계 각국의 맥주들이 국내 편의점과 슈퍼를 점령하기 시작했다. 최근에는 더욱이 맥주 생산과 관련된 엄격했던 법규가 완화되어 갈수록 많은 국내 소규모 수제맥주 제조자들이 감각적인 맥주들을 생산하여 판매하고 있다. 이러한 추세는 서울을 시작으로 현재는 부산까지 내려왔다.

  국내 어디도 한국에서 두 번째로 큰 도시인 부산의 광안리 지역보다 수제맥주가 빨리 확대되어 나간 곳은 없다. 양조장, 생맥주집, 레스토랑, 펍 등은 점점 발달하는 대중의 미각을 고려해 다양한 종류의 인디아 페일 에일, 사워 에일, 세종을 제공하기 시작했다.

  It all started in 2013 with Galmegi Brewing Company. Debuting within shouting distance to the beach, their beers, first brewed by contract from their own recipes, were a revelation and an instant success. A year later, Galmegi took full control of their hopped-up hopes and opened their own brewery nearby. Today, Galmegi Brewing Company beer can be enjoyed throughout Busan and throughout South Korea. There are currently six Galmegi locations, including the brewery and five franchises in the Kyungsung University/Pukyong National University area, Pusan National University area, in Seomyeon, Nampo and Haeundae.

  이 모든 시작은 2013년 갈매기브루잉에서 시작되었다. 광안리 해변 인근의 임대 양조장에서 개발한 그들만의 레시피로 제조된 첫 번째 맥주는 성공이었고, 혁명이었다. 갈매기부르잉은 1년 후 목표를 달성하고, 근처에 자체 양조장을 오픈하였다. 그 뒤로 그들은 계속해서 성장하여 오늘날 갈매기브루잉의 맥주는 부산을 넘어 전국에서 구매할 수 있게 되었다. 현재는 광안리의 자체 양조장과 경성대/부경대, 부산대, 서면, 남포, 해운대 등 총 5개 지점을 운영 중이다.

  But, Galmegi is far from the only craft beer option available here these days. Gorilla Brewing Company launched in a fresh but modestly-sized location in the Millak-dong neighborhood in 2016. Quickly seeing a need for expansion, they moved early the following year to a much larger space, a short walk down the road from Galmegi Brewing Company.

  갈매기부르잉을 잇는 다양한 수제맥주들이 쏟아져 나오고 있다. 고릴라브루잉은 2016년 민락동의 작은 가게에서 시작됐다. 그리고 얼마 지나지 않아 확장하였고 이듬해 초 갈매기브루잉 인근의 훨씬 더 넓은 장소로 이사했다.

 Praha 993

  Praha 993, based in the F1963 building, located next to Costco in Mangmi-dong, has brought Czech craft beer to South Korea since early 2017. Besides their brewery, Praha 993 beer can be enjoyed in their second location in Seomyeon and at many bars throughout the city. Brewmaster Matěj Žaba, who came to South Korea from the Czech Republic in late 2016, notes the craft beer scene in South Korea is still developing. “I have found more and more people are getting interested in craft beers and the older breweries are increasing their capacities,” he says.

  망미동의 코스트코 옆의 F1963에 위치한 프라하993은 2017년 초 체코의 수제맥주를 한국으로 수입해왔다. 프라하993의 체코 맥주는 망미동 양조장뿐만 아니라 서면점 그리고 부산 내 다른 술집에서도 맛볼 수 있다. 맥주조제 최고책임자 마테자바(Matěj Žaba)는 2016년 말 체코에서 한국을 방문하여 한국 수제맥주 시장의 발전 가능성에 주목하였다. "점점 더 많은 사람들이 수제맥주에 관심을 가지고 유서 깊은 양조장들이 그 규모를 늘려가고 있는 것을 발견했다."고 마테자바는 말한다. "한국의 맥주 시장의 역사는 대단하다. 몇 년 전만 해도 대형 맥주공장에서 생산된 맥주가 주를 이루었고 사람들은 그것만이 '맥주'라고 인식했다. 한국 맥주 시장은 급격하게 성장하고 있으며 맥주 애호가들이 매해 늘어가고 있다."며 평가했다.

  Wild Wave Brewing opened its brewery in Songjeong in 2017. Starting in Gwangan in 2015 as a primarily sour beer collaboration with other breweries, Wild Wave today produces a number of beer styles, from sour to ale, kolsch to IPA. Frank Kang, one of Wild Wave’s founders, notes the incredible growth the Korean craft beer industry has seen in the past five years, especially in Busan. “Many people all over the country have come to Busan for craft pub-crawling,” he says, adding that the city has officially chosen to support the craft beer industry here as one of Busan’s signature tourism products.

  와일드웨이브는 2017년 송정에 양조장을 열었다. 2015년 광안리에서 다른 양조장들과 협력하여 최초로 사워 비어를 만든 것을 시작으로, 오늘날 와일드웨이브는 사워부터 에일, 쾰쉬부터 IPA까지 많은 종류의 맥주 종류들을 생산하고 있다. 와일드웨이브의 설립자중 한명인 프랭크 강(Frank Kang)은 특히 부산에서 두드러진 한국 수제맥주 업계가 이룬 지난 5년간의 성장에 주목한다. 그는 "전국에서 상당수의 사람들이 부산에 있는 수제맥주집들을 순례하기 위해 찾아왔다."며 부산시에서 수제맥주를 부산의 주요 관광 상품 중 하나로 공식 지지하겠다고 결정한 것을 언급했다.

  Steven Allsopp, CEO of Galmegi Brewing Company, also highlights Busan’s place in Korean craft beer. “There are a limited number of breweries here in Busan but it is considered a mecca among beer enthusiasts,” particularly the Gwangan area, he says. Ryan Blocker, one of Galmegi’s head brewers, says when their first location opened, a foreign clientele already accustomed to craft beers were their main customers. But, that has changed as more and more Koreans have fallen in love with craft beer. “It’s a big change, how much more knowledgeable Koreans are about craft beer now versus then,” he says, noting that “seasonal trends,” how some beers are more popular during hot summer months than those that dominate during cold winters, have emerged.

"부산은 양조장 몇 개 없지만 맥주 애호가들 사이에서는 이미 메카로 통합니다. 특히 광안리요." 갈매기브루잉의 헤드 브루어 라이언 블락커는 첫 번째 갈매기브루잉를 열었을 때는 수제맥주에 익숙한 외국인들이 손님의 대부분을 차지했던 반면, 지금은 점점 더 많은 한국인들이 수제맥주에 빠지게 되면서 한국인의 비중도 높아졌다고 말했다. "한국인들이 수제맥주에 대해 얼마나 관심이 있는지는 예전과 비교하면 큰 변화라고 할 수 있다."며 맥주 종류에 따라 더운 여름과 추운 겨울에 더 인기가 있는 계절적인 유행이 생겨났음에 주목한다. 전반적으로 한국의 수제맥주 애호가들은 그들이 무엇을 마시고 있는지에 대해 더 깊은 안목을 가지게 되었다고 블락커는 말한다.

 Hurshimchung Brau

  On Busan’s north side, not only is Galmegi’s Pusan National University location holding court, the Hurshimchung Brau continues to impress. Long before the city’s craft beer revolution had taken hold, this German beer hall influenced destination located in Nongshim Hotel had been one of the preeminent opportunities to try a larger variety of beers. This is especially true every fall, as Hurshimchung Brau has held its own Oktoberfest celebration for over a decade.

  북부산 지역은 갈매기브루잉 부산대점과 함께 '허심청브로이'가 맥주 애호가들에게 인기 있어왔다. 부산에서 수제맥주 혁명이 일어나기 오래 전부터 독일 맥주의 영향을 받은 이 펍은 농심호텔에 위치하고 있는데, 이전부터 더 많은 종류의 세계 맥주들을 맛볼 수 있는 곳으로 주목 받았다. 허심청브로이는 매년 가을에 10년 넘게 옥토버페스트를 개최해오고 있다.

  Further southwest on Busan Metro line 1, in Nampo-dong, Akitu Taphouse is serving up several beers from Gijang’s Advanced Brewing. Until earlier this year, both the taphouse and brewery were known as Akitu. It is far from the only place to enjoy beers by Advanced, however, which currently does not have its brewery open to the public.

  부산의 남서쪽 지역인 지하철 1호선 남포에는 아키투탭하우스가 기장에 있는 어드밴스드 브루잉의 맥주들을 판매한다. 올 초까지만 해도 펍과 양조장 모두 ‘아키투’라는 이름으로 알려져 있었다. 이곳에서만 어드밴스드 브루잉의 맥주를 맛볼 수 있는 것은 아니지만, 현재는 어드밴스드 브루잉의 양조장은 대중에게 오픈되어 있지는 않다.

  Indeed, with so much craft beer available, much of it brewed right here in Busan, it’s about time the city’s breweries take a tip from the popular “wine trails” of the world and establish a “Craft Beer Trail.” From west to east, north to south, there is a weekend of fun and delicious exploration ahead.   Advanced Brewing was previously known as Akitu Brewing. The Akitu Taphouse, located in Nampo, still offers several beers that formerly carried their name. Making beers since 2015, thirsty travelers can often find Advanced’s delicious Focal IPA at finer pubs throughout the city.

Located on the first floor of the Hotel Nongshim, HurShimChung Brau produces several beers in the traditional German style and offers a number of beer hall-style foods and fun live entertainment to wash them all down. Their annual Oktoberfest outdoor event is always a raucous time.

  Galmegi is the granddaddy of craft brewers in Busan. Besides familiar pints like amber ales, pale ales and stouts, Galmegi Brewing Company has made beers using seasonal, Korea-specific ingredients such as their popular Yuja Gose and the highly-drinkable Seoulless Ginger.

  Gorilla Brewing Company moved on up from their significantlysmaller location in nearby Millakdong in early 2017 to a much larger, warehouse-chic second-floor location (which includes a first-floor “takeaway” bar). Live music, fish and chips on Fridays and free yoga on weekends are just some of Gorilla’s extracurricular activities.

  Located next to Costco in F1963, a former wire-manufacturing plant that now hosts art exhibits, Praha 993 offers beers made in the traditions of those found in the Czech Republic, the home of the brewery’s founders. Besides several beers, including pale ales, stouts, pilsners and a tasty seasonal pumpkin ale, a rotating menu of Czech foods and other familiar tastes can be enjoyed at their brewery.

  프라하993은 코스트코 옆의 와이어 공장이었던 문화공간 F1963에 위치하고 있으며, 체코 맥주를 만든다. 양조장에서는 페일 에일, 스타우트, 필즈너 그리고 맛있는 펌킨 에일 등 다양한 맥주와 함께, 주기적으로 바뀌는 체코 음식과 다른 익숙한 음식들도 제공된다. 서면에 두 번째 가게를 오픈하였다.

  In 2017, Wi ld Wave Brewing Company opened their own brewery a short walk from the Songjeong stop on the recently-opened Donghae Nambu Line. Previously known as “Wild Waves,” what started primarily as a sour beer project in Gwangan, Wild Wave Brewing Company has expanded beyond sour beers, offering kolsch, IPA, stouts and more, as well.

  와일드웨이브는 최근 운행을 시작한 동해남부선 송정역 근처이자 도보로 송정해변에서 10분 거리, 그리고 해운대에서 차로 10분 거리에 자체 양조장을 2017년 오픈했다. 이전까지 와일드웨이브스(Wild Waves)로 알려져 있는 이 곳은 광안리의 사워 비어 프로젝트와 함께 시작되어 이후 와일드웨이브로 확장되었다. 사워 비어 외에도 쾰쉬, IPA, 스타우트 등 다양한 인기 있는 맥주들을 판매한다.
