In 2017, I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Applied Foreign Languages (English and Japanese) from Bordeaux Montaigne University in France. For the first time, my university provided the opportunity for students to participate in an exchange program with South Korea. Because my university didn’t have a Korean Studies Department yet, students from any department were allowed to apply for the exchange.

  At first, I planned to study in Seoul but at that time my university did not have a partnership with a university there. Reluctantly I decided to come to Busan and I just ended up loving the spirit of this city. I arrived in August 2017. I had simply no information about Busan University of Foreign Studies (BUFS), and it was my first time in the city, although I had visited Seoul in the summer of 2016. As I was the first student from my university to come to BUFS, I was expected to be an “ambassador” and create a good impression.

  When I first came for my exchange program, the most difficult issue I faced was the language barrier. Some Korean people do not speak English at all, and I was really shy interacting with the locals. It took me a few weeks to feel at ease. After meeting local friends from the dormitory and my classmates, I started opening up.

  South Korea is a country which is deeply rooted in the philosophy of Confucianism. Sometimes we have to understand the implicit and read between the lines. When a foreigner makes some cultural mistakes, Korean people will not tell her/him about it. After paying careful attention to people’s behavior and asking my Korean friends I have overcome this struggle.

  At BUFS I usually have about twelve to fifteen hours of classes a week. I had Korean language classes which were taught only in Korean. Of course, our teachers were used to having students of different nationalities, so even if we could not communicate properly they knew how to teach us.

  2017년 나는 프랑스 보르도 몽테뉴 대학의 외국어 응용학과(영어와 일본어)를 졸업했다. 당시 학교에서는 재학생들을 대상으로 처음으로 한국 교환학생 프로그램을 시작했다. 학교에 한국어 전공이 없었기 때문에 모든 학과의 학생들이 이 프로그램에 지원할 수 있었다.

  처음에는 서울로 교환학생을 가고자 했다. 그러나 당시 우리 학교는 서울에 있는 대학교와는 협약이 체결되어 있지 않아 부산으로 오게 되었다. 부산에는 2017년 8월에 왔다. 그때 나는 내가 교환학생으로 가게 될 부산외국어대학교에 대해서 하나도 몰랐고 심지어 부산도 처음 방문하는 것이었다. (2016년도 여름에 서울엔 가본 적이 있지만 말이다.) 학교에서 처음으로 부산외대로 파견되는 교환학생으로서 나는 우리 학교의 ‘외교관’이 되어 좋은 인상을 심어주어야 했다.

  처음 한국 생활을 시작했을 때 가장 나를 힘들게 했던 것은 언어의 장벽이었다. 몇몇 한국 사람들은 영어를 아예 하지 못하는 데다가 당시 나는 한국 사람들과 어울리는 게 많이 어색했다. 익숙해지기까지는 몇 주가 걸렸는데, 기숙사, 동아리, 학교 친구들을 만나면서 마음을 열 수 있었다.

  한국은 유교 정신이 뿌리깊게 자리하고 있다. 한국인들은 외국인이 하는 문화적 실수들에 대해 잘 말해주지 않기에 나는 주의 깊게 사람들의 행동을 관찰하고 한국 친구들에게 물어가며 이 어려움을 극복할 수 있었다.

  나는 한 주에 12-15시간 정도 강의를 듣는데 내가 들었던 수업들은 오직 한국어로만 진행됐다. 다행히도 교수님들은 국적이 다른 학생들을 가르치는 것에 익숙했기에 아직 많이 미숙한 우리를 어떻게 가르쳐야 하는지 아셨다.

  Last September there was an orientation day to enable every university club to advertise their activities. I have been listening to Korean music for many years. It is one of the main reasons why I came to Korea. I joined the hip-hop club called “PUFF”. They helped me to integrate quickly. Besides, I have had the opportunity to perform over five times inside and outside the school. By joining this club, I have had the chance to meet many people from artistic fields such as DJs and performers. I have seen and partied with some B-boys, jazz and modern dancers.

  Furthermore, I have seen several hip-hop performances from the underground scene of Busan. I heard a lot about how Haeundae Beach was such a beautiful place but, to be honest, I like Gwangalli Beach better. For sure Haeundae Beach is a nice place and there are many things to enjoy, but the night view of Gwangalli is amazing to me. We can walk close to the beach and enjoy the wonderful night view of the Gwangan Bridge. While enjoying the view, you can easily find nice, affordable restaurants or coffee shops right in front of the beach.

  Many people had the preconceived idea that France is a country full of “cafés”, but it has few compared to Korea. Here there are different concepts, designs, menus and so on. Living in a dormitory for a year with strict rules was sometimes hard. Exchange students have no families nor hometown nearby. Whenever I needed to find a place outside school to relax, study or to listen to good music, I went to coffee shops.

  Before coming here, I was really concerned about racism. I watched a lot of videos about discrimination to be mentally prepared. Fortunately, it was less harsh than I expected. Nevertheless, I have experienced some discrimination. For example, some clubs refuse entry to foreigners. In the subway some people avoided sitting next to me. Despite these kinds of incidents, I did not experience a lot of racism. I think being able to speak Korean helped me to be more integrated within Korean society.

  My stay will be over soon, but I will definitely come back next year to enjoy the Korean culture. 

  작년 9월에는 교내 동아리들의 활동 홍보를 위한 오리엔테이션이 있었다. 한국 음악은 내가 한국에 오게 된 많은 이유들 중 하나이기도 하다. 나는 “PUFF” 라는 힙합 클럽에 가입하였다. 동아리 회원들은 내가 빨리 적응할 수 있도록 도와주었고. 더불어 5번이 넘도록 교내 · 외에서 공연할 수 있는 기회를 갖게 되었다. 동아리를 통해 디제이나 댄서 등 다양한 사람들을 많이 만날 수 있었다. 비보이, 재즈 및 현대무용가들을 만나 파티에 가기도 하고 힙합하는 사람들도 만날 수 있었다.

  나는 해운대 해변이 얼마나 아름다운 곳인지에 대해 많이 들었지만 솔직히 말하자면 광안리 해변을 더 좋아한다. 확실히 해운대 해변은 멋진 곳이고 즐길 거리도 많지만 광안리의 야경은 경이롭다. 해변가를 거닐며 광안 대교의 멋진 야경을 즐길 수 있고 야경이 보이는 해변 바로 앞에서는 예쁘고 저렴한 식당과 카페를 쉽게 찾을 수 있다. 많은 사람들이 프랑스에 카페가 많을 거라고 생각하지만 한국에 비하면 적다고 생각한다. 한국에는 다양한 컨셉과 디자인, 메뉴를 가진 카페들이 정말 많다. 엄격한 규칙이 있는 기숙사에서 사는 1년 동안 가끔은 힘들었다. 타국에서 온 교환학생으로서 가족도 가까이 없고 고향도 근처에 있지 않아서 학교 밖에서 휴식을 취하거나 공부하거나 좋은 음악을 듣고 싶을 때면 나는 카페로 향했다.

  한국에 오기 전 나는 인종차별에 대해 무척 걱정했다. 마음의 준비를 하고자 차별에 대한 영상들을 많이 찾아서 봤었다. 다행히도 한국에서의 차별은 내가 생각한 것처럼 심하지는 않았다. 그럼에도 어느 정도의 차별은 직접 경험했는데 몇 가지 예를 들면 클럽에서는 가끔 단지 외국인이라는 이유로 입장할 수 없었고, 지하철에서 어떤 사람들은 내 옆에 앉지 않았다. 이러한 일들에도 불구하고 한국어를 할 수 있었기에 나는 한국 사회에 더 잘 적응할 수 있었다. 내 교환학생 생활은 곧 끝이 나지만 내년에도 한국 문화를 즐기기 위해 꼭 다시 오고 싶다.
