Inaugurated in 2017, the Busan Museum of Movies ("BoM") is located on the edge of Yongdusan Park in Jung-gu district, right under the shadow of Busan Tower. Designed to be an interactive and learning experience, as well as a repository of Korea’s cinematographic history, BoM offers a large variety of activities. These include: The Trick Eye Museum, including the Trick Eye Museum with its amusing and playful optical illusions and an AR/VR adventure, or the Cinema Studio, with workshop-style sections allowing visitors to try their hand at various aspects of the filmmaking process: editing, visual effects, dubbing, music…

2017년 문을 연 부산영화체험박물관(Busan Museum of Movies, BoM)은 중구 용두산 공원 외곽, 부산 타워 바로 아래에 위치해 있다. 한국 영화 역사의 보고이자 쌍방향 학습을 할 수 있도록 설계된 이곳에는 재미있는 착시 효과를 이용한 트릭아이 미술관, AR/VR 체험, 방문객들이 편집, 시각효과, 더빙, 음악 등 영화제작의 여러과정을 직접 할 수 있는 워크샵을 제공하는 시네마 스튜디오 등 다양한 즐길 거리가 즐비하다.

BoM’s core purpose is to shed light on the history of cinema and on the ups-and-downs of the film industry in Korea, and more particularly in the city of Busan, its cradle in the country. While constant urban development has made all the original movie theaters disappear from the ever-changing city itself, the exhibition nevertheless provides an immersive journey into that long-gone era, through posters and excerpts of films, news clips, recreated miniatures of movie theaters’ facades, apt tools of the trade (cameras, sound recorders, lights, projectors), and of course, signs with detailed explanations, location maps and timelines. For foreign visitors, make sure to procure an audioguide before entering the exhibition, as most panels are written in Korean - with only the main titles translated into English.

부산영화체험박물관의 주목적은 한국 영화사 및 영화 산업의 우여곡절, 특히 한국 영화의 산실인 부산을 중심으로 조명한다. 지속적인 도시화의 결과로 본래의 영화관은 매일 매일 변하는 도시에서 사라졌지만, 박물관에서는 포스터, 영화, 클립, 미니어처 극장, 영화 장비(카메라, 음향장비, 조명, 프로젝트)를 비롯해 자세한 설명, 로케이션 지도, 타임라인 등의 설명문을 통해 오래 전에 사라진 시대를 여행할 수 있다. 외국인의 경우 영어 번역이 제공되는 메인 타이틀 외에는 대부분 한글로 쓰여 있으니 입장 전 오디오가이드를 구하자.

The history of cinema in Korea was heavily impacted by its political turmoil, with the Japanese occupation and the Korean War in particular being examined throughout the course of the exhibition as the evident roadblocks that these events were to the local film industry. Starting with the 1901 first screening for King Gojong, the exhibition successively revisits the key historical moments leading all the way to K-cinema’s current high, often stressing its connections to Busan. Indeed, this section wouldn’t be complete without fair mention of the city’s various film festivals, and the Busan International Film Festival especially, gets its own, gets its own and well-merited focused section - complete with a display of the many celebrities’ and filmmakers’ handprints which BIFF has made one of its signature traditions.

한국영화사는 일제강점기와 한국전쟁 등 정치적인 혼란 속에서 큰 영향을 받아왔는데, 전시회를 통해 이 사건들이 지역 영화 산업에 장애물이 되었다는 증거를 보여준다. 전시는 고종을 위한 첫 영화가 상영된 1901년부터 시작해, 부산과도 큰 연관이 있는 한국 영화의 성장까지 주요 역사적 사건들을 나열한다. 실제로 이 섹션은 부산의 수많은 영화제를 짚고 넘어가야 한다. 특히 부산국제영화제만을 위해 할당된 섹션도 있다. 이곳에서는 부산국제영화제의 대표적인 전통이 된 여러 연예인과 영화제작자들의 핸드프린트를 볼 수 있다.

However, the Museum’s true gem might be its least flashy, most unassuming offering: the exhibition titled Hong Young-chul’s Legacy Cherishes Busan Cinema. "A Collector and Discoverer", as the exhibit introduces him, the late cinephile gathered and eventually donated his large, private archive of photographs, posters, magazines, published scripts, film theory books… but also all the random memorabilia he amassed such as movie tickets or film imprints on ramen boxes! That considerable treasure-trove (around 50 thousands individual items…), which the Museum team hasn’t even finished mining yet, is a testament to Mr. Hong’s life-long devotion to cinema, but also a powerful reminder of the inextinguishable passion which that art form has been inspiring since its beginnings. A highlight of that section has to be the numerous photographs, tirelessly taken by Hong Young-chul himself during his weekends, of the large and colorful, but never preserved, billboards which Korean movie theaters used to erect in order to advertise big movie releases. A lost art unto itself!

하지만 박물관의 진가는 조용히 숨어있다. 바로 고 홍영철 한국영화자료연구원장의 기부자료를 전시한 '홍영철의 유산, 부산 영화를 담다' 특별전이다. 전시회는 시네필 홍영철 원장을 “수집가이자 발견가”라고 소개한다. 그는 사진, 포스터, 잡지, 대본, 영화이론서 등을 비롯해 영화표나 박스에 찍힌 영화 관련 도장 등의 수집품에 이르기까지 방대한 양의 개인 아카이브를 기증했다. 박물관 측에서 아직 발굴을 다 끝내지도 못한 이 보물(약 5만 점에 달한다)들은 일생을 영화에 바친 홍영철 원장의 헌신을 보여주는 증거이자 영화라는 예술을 향한 꺼지지 않는 열정을 상기시켜주는 강력한 물건들이다. 이 섹션의 하이라이트는 홍영철원장이 주말마다 꾸준히 찍은 어마어마한 양의 사진들이다. 사진에는 이제는 볼 수 없는 한 때 한국 극장가에서 중요한 영화가 개봉할 때마다 광고를 위해 걸었던 크고 알록달록한 광고판들이 담겨 있다. 사라져버린 예술인 것이다!

Part of a concerted effort to revitalize cinema within the Nampo area, whose presence there has waned since the ‘migration’ of the Busan International Film Festival towards Haeundae and Centum in the 2000s, BoM also features a 210-seat movie theater where it curates screenings and participates in local events like Community BIFF. As such, the Busan Museum of Movies is concerned as much about cinema’s past in this city, as it is to contributing to its future. BoM is open from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10AM to 6PM; visiting it is even better with its dedicated Smartphone app, downloadable for free. And, before you leave, make sure to drop by the rooftop garden.
