Busan is an international city, yet very different from most international cities around the world. There is a certain safety factor; I have never felt safer in any city around this world than I feel in Busan. My friends gave me a giant party after visiting my 100th country and one of the guests asked me which place I felt the safest in. I thought a long time. I had felt so safe in Switzerland, Dubai, Monaco, and even super safe on Easter Island! I thought about Singapore, Osaka, Norway, Sweden, and then finally I said “Busan, South Korea!” The kind people, and laid back ambiance give all who visit a feeling of both security and privacy. This safety is such a blessing to the lucky ones who have had the chance to visit such a city. There are indeed many famous international guests who have taken advantage of this great opportunity. They can savor overwhelming feasts of the finest foods, and enjoy the beautiful beaches and shopping districts - and yet, go unnoticed with sky blue freedom.

부산은 국제적인 도시이지만 전세계 대부분의 국제 도시와는 무척이나 다르다. 이곳에는 어떤 안전 요소가 있다. 나는 전 세계 어느 도시에서도 부산에서만큼 안전하다는 느낌을 느껴본 적이 없다. 100개국을 여행한 기념으로 친구들이 내게 근사한 파티를 열어주었는데, 그 때 한 명이 내게 가장 안전하다고 느낀 곳이 어디냐고 물었다. 나는 오랫동안 고심했다. 나는 스위스, 두바이, 모나코, 심지어 이스터 섬에서도 굉장히 안전하다고 느꼈다! 싱가포르, 오사카, 노르웨이, 스웨덴도 떠올렸다가, 마침내 이렇게 말했다. “대한민국 부산!” 부산의 친절한 사람들과 느긋한 분위기는 그곳을 찾는 누구에게나 안전감과 프라이버시를 보장한다. 이렇게 멋진 도시를 방문할 기회를 가졌던 행운아들에게는 축복과도 다름없다. 실제로도 이 멋진 기회를 제대로 누린 유명한 외국인 손님들이 많다. 최고의 음식과 함께한 어마어마한 축제들을 맛보기도 하고, 아름다운 해변과 쇼핑 구역을 즐기면서도 사람들의 시선에서 벗어나 청량한 하늘빛 자유를 마음껏 누렸다.

I was in Seoul last summer to see the famous Monet to Cezanne exhibition at the Hangaram Art Museum. As I stared into one of Monet’s beautiful garden paintings, I began to reminiscence. It was strange because my mind went back to a fall day in Busan, to the very first time I had ever visited an Art Gallery in South Korea. The painter had actually known Monet’s great grandson, and even showed him around Busan! I thought it was so wonderful that a relative of Monet had walked the beaches of Busan! As I stared into that painting, I began to wonder what Monet himself would have done if he had been given the blessing of visiting South Korea, and especially Busan! I wondered what he would have painted, or what he would have eaten, or what beautiful things would have caught his eye. My mind went back to that fall day. It was a late afternoon in November, perfect in every way. I still remember that it was the very first time I had worn a new sweater, and my friends and I were just finishing a massive feast of raw fish with all the side dishes. We ate for two blissful hours, and I remember looking out at the beautiful leaves changing color and wanting to go for a walk. We all parted on that late Saturday afternoon, and as I felt the cool breeze, and could smell the beautiful ocean, I began just wandering the winding streets behind some small hills that were near the ocean.

작년에는 그 유명한 모네에서 세잔까지 전시를 보기 위해 서울 한가람미술관을 찾았다. 모네의 아름다운 정원 그림을 보고 있던 나는 추억 속으로 젖어 들었다. 신기하게도 떠오른 것은 부산에서의 어느 가을 날, 한에서 처음으로 미술관에 들렀던 기억이었다. 화가는 모네의 증손자를 실제로 알고 있었고, 심지어는 그에 게 부산을 보여주기도 했다! 모네의 후손이 부산 해변을 거닐었다니 얼마나 신기한 일인지! 그 그림을 바라 보며 나는 모네 본인이 한국을, 특히 부산을 찾는 축복 을 누렸다면 어땠을지 궁금했다. 무엇을 그렸을지, 무엇을 먹었을지, 어떤 아름다운 것들이 그의 눈을 사로 잡았을지. 내 마음은 그 가을날로 돌아가 있었다. 모든 면에서 완벽한 11월의 늦은 오후였다. 아직도 기억한 다. 그 날은 내가 새 라코스테 스웨터를 처음 입은 날이었다. 친구들과 생선회와 더불어 반찬으로 한 상을 가득 채운 어마어마한 한 끼를 막 끝낸 참이었다. 두 시간에 걸친 행복한 식사를 한 뒤, 아름답게 물들어가는 단풍을 바라보며 산책을 하고 싶어했던 기억이 난다. 늦은 토요일 오후 친구들과 헤어진 나는 시원한 바람과 바다의 향기를 즐기며 바닷가 근처 작은 언덕 뒤 굽은 길을 걷기 시작했다.

I love wandering the streets across from the wonderful ocean! There is always some kind of beauty to find. I found hidden streets that led to beautiful hills, and soon my eyes were admiring the red and yellow leaves falling onto the empty streets. I wandered along feeling happy that fall was finally here to stay. I came upon a large public billboard that caught my eye. I had seen those bulletin boards before in certain neighborhoods; they were there to let people post news about missing cats or dogs, part time jobs, restaurants that delivered, things for sale, and right in the middle I saw a magnificent poster with an invitation to a small art gallery nearby. This caught my curiosity since it was the only English writing on the board. I took a photo of the poster, and I followed the streets and soon became lost. Finally, an older Korean woman asked me if I needed help and I showed her the photo. She smiled and then led me to the gate of a small art gallery. I rang the bell and a university student opened the door and informed me that the exhibition was soon to be closing, and that the artist would be back soon. I walked up the stairs and entered the giant room, and before me stood four walls of magnificent paintings! I was so impressed! It was as if I had been submerged, into the deep blue sea! The colors were bright and full of so much life.  Time passed very quickly as I admired all the magnificent paintings on the walls, and soon it was closing time. I asked the student when the artist would be coming back and was informed that because of a delay she would be there the following Saturday morning. I took some photos and left.

아름다운 언덕으로 이어지는 숨겨진 길을 걷다 텅 빈 거리를 채우는 울긋불긋한 단풍잎에 눈이 휘둥그레졌다. 드디어 가을이 왔다는 생각에 마음이 싱숭생숭했다. 그러던 중 시선을 사로잡는 대형 광고를 발견했다. 다른 동네에서도 그런 게시판을 본 적이 있었다. 소식지, 잃어버린 고양이나 강아지를 찾는 전단지, 아르바이트 전단지, 배달 가능한 식당, 물건 판매 등을 위해 이용하는 게시판이었다. 그리고 바로 그 중에 근처의 작은 미술관으로 나를 이끈 멋들어진 포스터가 있었다. 그 게시판에서 유일하게 영어로 적혀 있는 게시글 이었다. 포스터 사진을 찍고 거리를 나선 나는 금세 길을 잃어버렸다. 결국 노년의 어느 한국 여성이 내게 도 움이 필요하냐고 물어보셨고, 나는 그분께 포스터 사진을 보여드렸다. 그분은 미소를 지으며 어느 작은 미술관 문으로 나를 안내해 주었다. 미술관 벨을 누르자 한 대학생이 나와 문을 열어주며 전시회가 곧 끝날 것이고 작가가 돌아올 것이라고 알려주었다. 나는 계단을 올라 거대한 방에 들어섰고, 앞에는 장엄한 그림들이 걸린 벽 네 개가 서 있었다. 얼마나 감동이었는지! 마치 깊고 푸른 바다에 잠긴 것 같은 기분이었다! 밝은 색채 속에 넘치는 생명력이 깃들어 있었다. 벽에 걸린 엄청난 그림을 감상하는 동안 시간은 아주 빠르게 흘러 곧 폐관 시간이 되었다. 그 학생에게 작가가 언제쯤 돌아올지를 묻자, 지금은 늦어졌으니 다음 토요일 아 침에 올 것이라는 답을 들었다. 나는 사진을 몇 장 찍 은 뒤 그곳을 떠났다.

A week passed and I found myself at the gallery again, this time on a cold, fall, Saturday morning. As I climbed the steps I could hear talking and laughter. The artist Jade Park was inside showing a group of EPIK teachers her art. It was such a festive mood. There were Korean rice cakes and green tea available for the visitors, and the place was full of so much hospitality and beauty. I looked at the paintings again, and soon all the EPIK teachers left. Then I introduced myself and I struck up a conversation. As a reporter, I had to capture this lucky moment. I took out my notebook and began to ask her questions. I heard about her life, studying English and French at a great Busan university! She was so blessed to be fluent in Korean, French, and English! She would often get calls to show popular guests around. She had also helped translate business meetings with French speaking West African visitors who had come to Busan to sell their gold to Korean merchants. She was at the vortex of the French world, and then she told me about the lucky chance she had to show Monet’s great grandson around Busan. She was thrilled as she told me about that day, and the fact that he came to Busan to buy Korean art. I asked her if she had met other famous people. She told me about other famous people she had met, and one was of particular importance since I am a movie buff. She had met Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the great Thai director who had won the Palme D’or at the Cannes Film Festival. I was so eager to hear about him! She told me that he really loved Busan as well, and always wanted to come back and feast on the food again, and enjoy the beautiful night life. I left the gallery, and then, recently, I contacted her and asked if I could interview her for a short story in Busan Beat. She luckily agreed. It had been years since I had seen her, and I wanted to catch up on things. Here is that interview:

일주일이 지나 쌀쌀한 가을의 토요일 아침, 나는 다시금 그 미술관에 와 있었다. 계단을 오르는 동안 말소리와 웃음소리가 들렸다. 작가 Jade Park은 EPIK 교사들에게 작품을 보여주고 있었다. 마치 축제의 현장 같았다. 방문객들을 위해 한국식 떡과 녹차가 마련되어 있었다. 따뜻한 환대와 아름다움이 가득한 곳이었다. 그림을 한 번 더 둘러보는 동안 EPIK 교사들이 떠났고, 나는 자기소개와 함 께 대화를 나누었다. 기자로서 난 이 행운의 순간을 붙잡 아야만 했다. 노트를 꺼내 작가에게 질문을 하기 시작했다. 작가는 부산의 명문대에서 영어와 불어를 공부했다고 했다! 한국어, 프랑스어, 영어를 유창하게 구사하는 축복을 받은 사람이었다! 작가는 종종 유명 게스트들을 안내 해 달라는 부탁을 받곤 했다. 한국과 금을 거래하는 서아 프리카인들과 비즈니스 미팅을 할 때 불어 통역을 돕기도 했다. 프랑스라는 세상의 소용돌이 속에 있던 작가는 내게 모네의 증손자에게 부산 관광을 시켜주는 행운의 기 에 대해 이야기해 주었다. 그 날이 얼마나 감격스러웠는지, 그가 한국 미술품을 구매하러 왔다는 사실에 얼마나 전율이 일었는지 말이다. 나는 작가에게 다른 유명인을 만난 적 있는지 물었다. 작가는 자신이 만난 유명인들에 대해 말을 해 주었고, 그 중 한 명은 특히나 중요한 사람이 었다. 나는 영화광이었으니까. 작가가 만난 사람은 칸 영 화제에서 황금종려상을 수상한 유명한 태국 감독 아피찻 폰드 위세타쿨(Apichatpong Weerasethakul)이었다. 그에 관한 이야기를 더 듣고 싶어 견딜 수가 없었다! 감독은 부산을 정말 사랑했고, 언제나 다시 부산에 와서 여러가지 음식과 아름다운 밤을 즐기고 싶다고 말했다고 한다. 미술관을 떠나기 전, 나는 작가에게 부산비트에 실을 인터뷰를 위해 연락해도 괜찮을지 물어보았고, 다행히도 흔쾌한 수락을 얻었다. 이 날 이후 벌써 몇 년이 지났지만 나 는 그 간의 근황을 묻고자 했다. 인터뷰는 다음과 같다.

Q. Tell me about your life as an artist.
A. I started out here in Busan working to become an interior designer. I won a special award, and then worked for several years. But then I fell in love with both English and French. I finally finished up my Master’s Degree in French here in Busan, and started to develop my art in new ways. When I see white paper I feel a great inspiration and then I start to paint and feel so full of a great euphoria! I love to just create beauty. I have a new style of painting now that I have been working on!

Q. 작가로서의 삶에 대해 이야기해 주세요.
A. 인테리어 디자이너가 되기 위해 부산에서 일을 시작했어요. 특별한 상을 받고 그 이후 몇 년간 쭉 일했습니다. 그러다 영어와 불어를 사랑하게 되었어요. 그래서 부산에서 불어 석사 학위를 받고, 새로운 방식으로 저의 예술을 발전시키기 시작했습니다. 흰 종이를 보면 커다란 영감이 떠올라요. 그림을 그리기 시작하면 어마어마한 행복감이 찾아오죠! 저는 아름다움을 창조하는 행위가 좋아요. 현재는 새로운 스타일의 그림을 작업 중이에요!

Q. Tell me about this new style.
A. Well, it is called Structural Elucidation Artisti. If you put this together it makes the acronym of SEA. It was invented here in Busan and I am really proud to be born and raised in this great city!

Q. 새로운 스타일에 대해 이야기해 주세요.
A. 구조적 설명의 예술가(Structural Elucidation Artisti) 라고 할까요. 줄여서 SEA라고도 할 수 있어요. 부산에서 만들어낸 예술이고, 저는 이 멋진 도시에서 나고 자랐다는 사실이 무척 자랑스럽습니다.

Q. That is really great! Where do you live in Busan?
A. Haeundae! I have lived in Haeundae my whole life, and the sea was always just down the road. Now that I think about it, our family was so lucky to have lived in a house by the sea.

Q. 정말 멋지네요! 부산 어디에 사세요?
A. 해운대에 살아요! 평생을 해운대에서 살았죠. 길만 내려가면 언제나 바다가 있었어요. 돌이켜 생각하면 바닷가 근처에 살 수 있었던 우리 가족은 참 행운이었어요.

Q. I agree! I love the sea! Tell me more about Structural Elucidation Artisti.
A. Well, let me start with how we came up with the name. I was in a café here in Busan with another artist friend, a great photographer, and we were trying to come up with a new theory for our ideas about art. In my house in Haeundae we have a small garden with leaved plants, and sometimes under the hot sun, I would sit underneath the giant green leaves, and soon my eyes would look up and see a magnificent gold color. It was so soft, and bright, and full of comfort. That experience is a simple example of Structural Elucidation Artisti. Structure comes from Latin and means: to place together, build, and assemble. Elucidate means, to make clear, or throw light upon- which, means ‘to explain’. Artisti is the Italian word for artists, or creators. So basically when you put the three words all together they become a living sea of creativity where painters, or photographers, or poets, can choose certain significant images or words in everyday life, and then thoughtfully assemble them to create one special dynamic emotion that can be painted, photographed, or written down in a poem.

Q. 맞아요! 저도 바다를 정말 좋아해요. 구술가에 대해 조금 더 말씀해 주세요.
A. 이 이름을 어떻게 생각해냈는지부터 말씀 드릴게요. 훌륭한 사진작가 친구와 부산의 카페에 앉아있을 때였어요. 예술에 대한 생각을 정리해 줄 새로운 이론을 생각 해내려고 애쓰던 참이었죠. 해운대에 있는 제 집에는 잎 이 무성한 식물들이 있는 작은 정원이 있는데, 때로 그 커다란 녹색 잎 아래에서 뜨거운 태양을 올려다보면 황 홀한 금빛이 보이곤 했어요. 정말로 부드러우면서도 밝고 평온이 가득한 색이었어요. 이 경험은 Structural Elucidation Artisti의 단적인 예라고 할 수 있습니다. Structure(구조)는 라틴어에서 온 단어입니다. 합치다, 짓다, 모으다라는 의미입니다. Elucidate(설명)은 무언 가를 분명하게 하다, 빛을 비추다, 즉 ‘설명하다’라는 의미입니다. Artisti(예술가)는 예술가 또는 창작자를 뜻하 는 이탈리아어입니다. 이 세 단어를 모아놓고 보자면 화가, 사진작가, 시인들이 일상 생활에서 중요한 이미지나 단어를 선택해 심사숙고 끝에 조합하여 하나의 특별하고 다이내믹한 감정을 그림으로, 사진으로, 시로서 표현하는 살아있는 창작의 바다를 의미합니다.

Q. So the artist is always looking for significant things to create significant emotions?

A. Exactly. In chemistry there is also something called Structural Elucidation, but it is very different to my art concept. It is looking deeply at chemicals.

Q. 즉 예술가란 특별한 감정을 창조해내기 위해 특별한 것을 찾는다는 의미인가요?

A. 맞아요. 화학에도 구조적 설명이라는 게 있습니다. 하지만 제 개념과는 많이 달라요. 이건 화학물질을 보다 깊이 들여다보는 것이죠.

Q. That is so interesting! So you do more than just paint?

A. I paint, but I also do collages. I have my paintings and when I come upon a new feeling from some great event, I use many  sources such as old newspapers.

Q. 정말 흥미롭군요! 그림 외에 다른 것도 하시나요?

A. 저는 그림 그리는 사람이지만 콜라주 작업도 합니다.  

그림도 그리지만, 어떤 큰 사건에서 새로운 느낌을 받을  때면 오래된 신문 같은 요소를 활용합니다.

Q. Can I include one or two of your works for Busan Beat?

A. Yes, of course.

Q. 부산비트에 작가님 작품을 한두 점 실어도 괜찮을까요?

A. 물론입니다.

Q. Do you have an exhibition coming up?

A. Yes. I will be doing one in Mexico this winter! I will be making some exhibitions in Europe soon as well, and I will keep you updated!

Q. 새로 전시를 준비하고 계신다고요?

A. 네. 이번 겨울 멕시코에서 전시회가 열려요! 유럽에서도 조만간 전시회를 몇 번 가질 예정이니 그때마다 연락드릴게요!!
