부산국제영화제 영화리뷰

The 26th iteration of the Busan International Film Festival was held from October 6 through 15, 2021. This year a total of 223 films were shown from 70 countries, a much smaller number than previous years due to the effect the pandemic has had on the film making community. This year’s selection had all the hallmarks of quality festival films. Here are reviews of some of the films.

제 26회 부산국제영화제가 2021년 10월 6일부터 15 일까지 개최되었다. 올해는 팬데믹으로 영화 제작업계가 타격을 받으면서 전년에 비해 훨씬 적은 70개국 223 편의 영화가 상영되었다. 올해 선정작은 모두 훌륭한 완성도를 보여주었다. 그 중 몇몇 작품을 소개한다.

Asteroid
소행성

Based on the real life of Ebrahim Zarozehi who also plays the main character, director Mehdi Hoseinivand Aalipour shows what it is like when a child is forced to grow up and be the breadwinner in his family. Set in a small village in a desert area of Iran, the film shows Ebrahim and his family as they attempt to earn money to finish construction on their family home. The inspiration for the film came when Hoseinivand Aalipour was helping a friend produce a film set in the desert. It was here that he met Ebrahim and was struck by the way the boy was always working. After returning to his home in Tehran, the director couldn’t stop thinking about the boy and so he began writing a script about him.

에브라힘(Ebrahim Zarozehi)의 실화를 기반으로 한 영화로, 본인이 실제 주인공으로 등장한다. 메흐디 호세인반 드 아알리푸르(Mehdi Hoseinivand Aalipour) 감독은 어린아이가 어른이 되기를 강요받으며 집안의 생계를 이끌어야 하는 삶이 어떠한지를 보여준다. 이란 사막지대의 작은 마을을 배경으로, 영화는 에브라힘과 가족이 집 공사 를 마무리할 돈을 마련하기 위해 애쓰는 모습을 담았다. 아알리푸르 감독은 사막에 영화 세트를 짓는 친구를 돕다 가 영화에 대한 아이디어를 떠올렸다. 그러던 중 에브라힘 을 만났고, 이 소년이 언제나 일하고 있다는 사실을 깨달았다. 테헤란으로 돌아와서도 그 소년에 대한 생각을 멈출 수 없었던 감독은 대본을 써 내려가기 시작했다.

The story itself is a bit disjointed, an effect that the filmmaker intended in order to show the focus of children. Several things happen around the boy, yet they are never resolved. When asked, the director stated it was to show that the boy himself didn’t know how they were resolved and, in many cases, didn’t really care about them after they stopped affecting him. The relationship between the characters was excellently portrayed by the actors, most of whom had never acted before. Ebrahim and the other children in the film did an excellent job and conveyed all the joy of being children.

줄거리 자체는 조금 개연성이 없지만 제작자들은 어린 아이들에게 집중한다. 소년을 둘러 싸고 여러 가지 사건이 일어나지만 좀처럼 해결될 기미가 없다. 감독은 소년 자신 조차도 일이 어떻게 풀릴지 알지 못하며, 대부분의 경우 사건이 더 이상 자신에게 영향력을 미치지 않게 되면 그 다지 신경 쓰지 않는다는 것을 보여주고자 했다. 배우들 대부분 연기 경력이 전혀 없는데도 불구하고 멋지게 인물들 간의 관계를 묘사했다. 영화에 등장하는 에브라힘과 다른 아이들은 맡은 역할을 훌륭하게 완성해냄으로써 어린 아이로 살아가는 기쁨을 제대로 전해준다.

The cinematography by Davood Rahmani was one of the the best things about the film. The way the desert is shown in all its simple glory, as well as the use of light and darkness to convey emotions, allowed for the film to resonate better.
The film is slow moving and contemplative. One that really dives into the mind of a young boy who works hard to support his mother and siblings.

다우드 라흐마니(Davood Rahmani)의 연출 역시 영 화의 가장 큰 볼거리 중 하나다. 영화 속 사막은 찬란한 장관을 연출하고, 빛과 어둠을 이용한 감정 전달은 영화 에 커다란 울림을 더한다.
영화는 잔잔하고 조용하게 흘러간다. 어머니와 동생들을 부양하기 위해 애쓰는 어린 소년의 마음을 절절히 느낄 수 있는 작품이다.

Farewell My Hometown
안녕, 내 고향

Directed by Er Zhou Whang, Farewell, My Hometown is a movie set in three episodes. Each episode consists of a woman telling the audience about a story from her life in China. The first story comes from an older woman living in the mountains as she reflects on her life in poverty, a life of hard work, and the death of her child. The second comes from a young woman living in the city with her boyfriend in an apartment full of boxes as she tells about how lonely her life was after she moved to Beijing to live in a dance school. The third tells about a woman’s life as a college student in the 1980s, where she enjoyed her life and fell in love with a poor working-class man. The film shows the difficult lives of three different generations. Consisting almost entirely of narration set above the film, the stories make for an interesting interplay among the different generations.

왕 얼 저우(Er Zhou Whang) 감독의 안녕, 내 고향은 세 가지 에피소드로 구성되어 있다. 각각의 에피소드는 한 여성이 관객들에게 중국에서의 자신의 삶을 이야기 해주는 형식이다. 첫 번째 이야기는 산간지방에 사는 나이든 여성이 빈곤, 중노동, 자녀들의 죽음 속에서 살아온 자신의 삶을 반추한다. 두 번째 주인공은 박스로 가득 찬 도시의 아파트에서 남자친구와 함께 살아가고 있는 젊은 여성으로, 무용 학교에 다니기 위해 베이징으로 온 뒤 얼마나 삶이 외로웠는지 이야기한다. 세 번째 주인공은 1980년대의 대학 시절에 얼마나 행복했는지, 어떻게 가난한 노동 계급 남자와 사랑에 빠졌는지 말한다. 영화는 세 세대의 삶의 힘겨움을 그려낸다. 거의 영화 전체가 나레이션으로 구성되어 있어, 서로 다른 세 세대의 흥미로운 상호작용을 보여준다.

The cinematography by Zhi Qiang Lan is simply stunning. The way different areas, from rural mountain villages to urban settings are portrayed is simply gorgeous. The beauty of China really shows through. Unfortunately, the way the stories are presented makes the beautiful cinematography nearly useless. Very little that is shown on screen relates to the story being told. In fact, the way the movies are presented, the same effect could be had if there had been no pictures at all. While the stories are interesting and the cinematography is beautiful, the way the two are connected did not make for a movie that matches either’s individual quality.

즈창란(Zhi Qiang Lan)의 연출은 말 그대로 환상적이다. 작은 산골마을부터 도시까지 다양한 공간을 멋지게 그려낸다. 중국의 아름다움을 그대로 관통해 바라볼 수 있다. 안타깝게도 이야기가 그려지는 방식은 이 아름다운 영상미를 거의 무용지물로 만든다. 스크린에 보이는 영상 대부분이 이야기와 하등 상관이 없다. 사실 영화가 전개되는 방식은 영상이 전혀 없었더라도 똑같은 효과 를 보였을 것이다. 흥미로운 이야기와 아름다운 영상미가 있지만 두 가지가 결합된 방식은 둘 중 무엇도 제대로 표현하지 못한다.

Fairy
요정

Falling in love is easy, as they say, but making it last is work. Looking at the lives of two café owners who fall in love and get married, director Shin Tack-su takes a simple concept, two café owners waiting for their lease to expire so they can combine their assets, into a charming story about marriage, family, and a sudden change of good fortune. When the couple meets a young man named Suk (Kim Sin-bi), they (Kim Ju-hun and Rhy Hyun-kyung) take him in and give him a job. After noticing that business in the café where he works improves, the two subtly fight over him which allows the audience to see the increasing fractures in their relationship. However, instead of leading them to break up, it shows that these struggles can be overcome with time and effort. The performances by Ju-hun and Hyun-kyung are wonderfully delivered and do a lot to draw you into the lives of these characters. Kim Sin-bi’s performance is wonderfully understated, leading to an understanding that the character he plays is just going along with the situation; “let things fall as they may” kind of person. The cinematography by Lim Soo-jeong fits well with the story and the music by Kwak Yu-ri is fun and does well to help propel the story. Fairy is a charming way to spend an afternoon.

사람들이 말하길 사랑에 빠지는 것은 쉽지만, 사랑을 지속하는 것은 어렵다고 한다. 사랑을 하고 결혼을 한 두 카페 사장의 삶을 통해 신택수 감독은 단순한 방법을 선택한다. 각자의 전세가 만료되어 살림을 합칠 수 있기를 고대하며 결혼과 가족이라는 멋진 삶을 꿈꾸다 신기한 행운을 마주하게 된다. 두 연인이 석(김신비)이라는 이름의 젊은 남자를 차로 쳤을 때, 두 사람은(김주헌, 류현경) 그를 데려가 일자리를 준다. 그가 일하는 카페가 점점 잘 되어 간다는 걸 깨달은 두 사람은 미묘한 신경전을 벌이며 관객들로 하여금 관계가 조금씩 어긋난다는 걸 느끼게 한다. 하지만 영화는 연인을 헤어지게 만들기보다는 시간과 노력을 들여 극복해나가는 모습을 보여준다. 김주헌과 류현경의 훌륭한 연기는 두 인물의 삶에 몰입할 수 있도록 해 준다. 김신비는 그가 연기하는 인물이 그저 상황에 맞 춰 흘러간다는 것을 보여주는 놀랍도록 절제된 연기를 선보인다. 임수정의 연출과 곽유리의 음악은 이야기와 어우러져 날아오르는 동력이 되어준다. 요정은 즐거운 오후를 위한 좋은 선택이 될 것이다.
