Hello, everyone. I’m WANG YILI (Chinese, F-5 permanent residency), no. 270 honorary Busan citizen. I’m very happy to write for this Busan Beat sports section. The Asian Games, which is Asia’s biggest sports championship, was held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8, 2023. There were 40 games with 482 gold medals earned from keen competitions, and it was wonderful to see the sports players putting all their efforts in for the gold medals.
There is no doubt that this is how sports steal everyone’s heart.
여러분, 안녕하세요. 저는 제270호 부산명예시민 왕의립(WANG YILI, 중국 국적, F-5 영주권)입니다. 부산비트에 스포츠 관련 기고할 수 있게 되어 매우 기쁩니다. 때마침 2023.09.23.~10.08 중국 항저우에서 아시아 최대의 스포츠대회 아시안게임 40개 종목, 금메달 482개의 치열한 경기를 펼쳤는데 금메달을 목표로 혼신을 다하는 선수들의 모습이 정말 아름다웠습니다.
그것이 바로 스포츠의 매력이 아닐까요?
Since the very first day of 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, I have checked the medal lists more than 10 times a day, cheering for Chinese players, “Jia you! Jia you!”, and to Korean players, “Fighting! Aja, aja!” with all my heart. I’m sure not only I but all of my non-Korean friends staying in Korea are pro-Korea (親韓, to like Korea), knowledgeable about Korea (知韓, to know well about Korea including its politics, economy, culture, society, sports, etc.), and Korea-loving (愛韓, foreigners who start to love Korea, not just like Korea), and the Korean sports warriors were able to do their best showing their real sports power thanks to the heartful cheering voice of 50 million Koreans and 2 million international residents in Korea.
저는 2022 항저우아시안게임 첫날부터 지금까지 하루에 10번 이상 메달순위를 확인할 정도로 멋진 경기들을 관람하면서 중국선수들에게 "짜이유, 짜이유", 한국선수들에게 "화이팅, 아자, 아자" 아낌없이 마음속으로 응원 메시지 보냈었습니다. 아마 저 뿐만 아니라, 한국에서 체류 중인 외국인 친구들도 모두 친한(親韓, 한국을 좋아하는 외국인), 지한(知韓,국적이 한국이 아니면서 한국의 정치, 경제, 문화, 사회, 스포츠 등 다양한 분야에 대해 지식을 가지고 있는 외국인), 애한(愛韓, 한국을 좋아한다는 단계로부터 사랑한다는 단계로 진입하는 외국인)이라 대한민국 국민 5000만 명과 재한 체류 외국인 200만 명의 진심 어린 응원에 힘입어, 태극전사 모두 최선을 다할 수 있었고 스포츠 강국의 매력을 보여줬다고 생각합니다.
Lots of world sports championships are ready in 2024. The 33rd Summer Olympics will be held in Paris, France 2024, and the eyes of the whole world are on the Olympics, as it has been 12 years since the London Olympics, last time they were held in Europe. I am, however, more interested in 2024 World Team Table Tennis Championships that will be held in Busan. The fact that famous Chinese table tennis players will attend the championships is not the only reason for my excitement.
내년 2024 에도 각종 세계 스포츠대회들이 예정되어 있습니다. 2024년 프랑스 파리에서 제33회 하계올림픽 개최되는데, 2012년 영국 런던 올림픽 이후 유럽에서 12년 만에 개최되는 만큼 전 세계로부터 각광을 받고 있습니다. 하지만 저는 올림픽보다 우리 부산에서 개최될 2024 세계탁구선수권대회에 더 관심을 갖고 있습니다. 중국 유명한 탁구 선수들이 참가한다는 이유 때문만은 아닙니다.
Being one of the top 3 countries in table tennis, Korea has never hosted the World Team Table Tennis Championships so far. You will probably remember that Korea was announced as host of the 2020 World Team Table Tennis Championships in May 2018 for the first time, which were to be held in March 2020, but were cancelled unfortunately after 3 delays due to COVID-19. However, giving up is something you say when you count cabbages.
사실 대한민국은 탁구 TOP3 강국임에도 세계탁구선수권대회를 한 차례도 개최하지 못한 아쉬움이 있습니다. 독자 여러분도 기억이 나시겠지만, 지난 2018년 5월 대한민국 최초로 2020 부산세계탁구선수권대회 유치를 확정했었고, 2020년 3월에 개최 예정이었으나 갑작스런 코로나19 확산으로 인해 3차례 연기 후 안타깝게 취소되며 좌절된 적이 있습니다. 하지만 포기란 배추 셀 때나 하는 말(Giving up is something you say when you count cabbages)입니다.
At the regular general meeting of International Table Tennis Federation held in Houston, USA, in November 2021, Busan stood again for a challenge as a candidate and was successfully selected for the 2024 World Team Table Tennis Championships. I believe this result came from the sincerity of the people in the field who regretted the unavoidable cancellation. I’m looking forward to the monumental moment of Korea hosting the World Team Table Tennis Championships for the first time for 10 days beginning on February 16, 2024. It is a festival for every fan of K-sports as it will become a milestone in the history of Korean table tennis.
지난 2021년 11월 미국 휴스턴에서 열린 국제탁구연맹 정기총회에서 부산광역시가 다시 한번 유치 후보지로서 도전하며 결국 2024년 세계탁구선수권대회 개최지로 선정되는 쾌거를 이뤘습니다. 부산광역시의 적극적인 재유치 노력, 2020년 부산세계탁구선수권 대회의 불가피한 취소에 대한 탁구인들의 아쉬움과 재유치 염원이 반영된 결과라고 생각합니다. 다가오는 2024년 2월 16일부터 10일간 대한민국 최초 세계탁구선수권대회 개최되는 기념비적인 순간이 기대됩니다. 대한민국 탁구 역사의 이정표가 될 만큼 K-스포츠를 사랑하는 모두를 위한 축제다.

The website introduces the symbol of 2024 World Team Table Tennis Championships Busan, which was designed to symbolize the harmony of people around the world and promote Busan’s diverse charms and the beauty of Korea.
The trophy-shaped figure in the middle symbolizes harmony and sportsmanship by representing two players shaking hands in the shape of Diamond Bridge, a landmark of Busan, while a circle in the background symbolizes the sky. The circle is an atypical shape rather than a perfect circle, which implies the mysterious and natural beauty of the Moon Jar, a representative artwork of Korean aesthetic sense.
The dynamic and curving line like haze represents the enthusiasm of players attending the championships and the liveliness of Busan.
The circle on the upper right corner represents the sun above the sky, and all of these elements combined, turn into a racket and a ball.
해당 대회 사이트에는 2024 부산세계탁구선수권대회의 상징이 소개되고 있는데, 세계인이 하나가 되는 화합의 정신, 다채로운 매력이 공존하는 도시 부산과 한국의 아름다움을 세계에 알리고자 하는 취지로 개발되었다고 합니다.
상징 중앙의 트로피 형태의 도형은 부산의 랜드마크인 광안대교(Diamond Bridge)를 모티브로 하여 두 명의 선수가 악수를 하는 모습을 형상화함으로써 화합과 스포츠 정신을 상징하고 그 배경이 되는 원형은 하늘을 상징하며 정원(正圓)이 아닌 비정형의 동그라미를 사용하여 한국의 미의식을 나타내는 대표적인 예술품인 달항아리의 신비롭고 자연스러운 아름다움을 함축한다고 합니다.

오른쪽 위의 원형은 하늘 위로 떠오르는 태양을 상징하며 이 모든 요소들이 결합된 전체 상징의 형태는 탁구 라켓과 공의 형상을 이룹니다.
Mascot of the Championships, Chopy & Loopy
대회 마스코트 초피(Chopy)& 루피(Loopy)
Chopy and Loopy were designed after the city bird of Busan, the seagull. It’s known that the male mascot Chopy was named after ‘chop’, a defense skill in table tennis. It is a character who has accurate movement and is prudent, just like the defense skill.
The female mascot Loopy was named after ‘loop’, an attack skill in table tennis. She likes to ‘go out to play and run’, just like the attack skill.
초피와 루피는 부산광역시 시조인 갈매기를 형상화한 모습으로, 남자 마스코트 '초피(Chopy)'는 탁구 수비형 기술 '촙(chop)'에서 착안했다고 알려졌습니다. 수비형 기술의 성질처럼 ‘움직임이 정확하고 신중한’ 캐릭터를 뜻합니다.
여자 마스코트'루피(Loopy)'는 탁구 공격형 기술 '루프(loop)'에서 유래하며, 공격형 기술의 특성을 반영한 '놀고 뛰어다니는 것을 좋아하는' 캐릭터를 의미합니다.
BEXCO, a landmark of the world’s well-known marine city Busan, will host the championships successfully based on their know-hows and distinctive strategies they have collected by hosting and holding world prominent international events.
세계적인 해양도시 부산의 랜드마크인 BEXCO는 세계 유수의 초대형 국제행사를 성공적으로 유치, 개최한 다년간의 노하우와 차별화된 운영 전략으로 성공적인 탁구대회가 진행될 예정입니다.
There are less than 2 months left till November 28, 2023, when the final decision about the World EXPO 2030 host will be made. I sincerely wish Busan can be the venue for the Expo with the efforts and prayers of 3.30 million Busan citizens and 70,000 international residents in the city full of happiness and charms.
2030 세계박람회 개최지 확정 시기인 2023년 11월 28일까지 2개월 채 남지 않은 상황에, 330만명 부산시민과 7만 명의 부산 거주 외국인의 노력과 기도로 꼭 행복지수 만점, 매력 넘치는 부산이 최종 개최지로 선정되길 기원합니다.
